In this study an attempt was made to analyze the socio- economic impact on beneficiaries of commercial layer packages developed and introduced by Poultry Management Technique Improvement Project (PMTIP) in 3 different sub- sites of Bangladesh. For this purpose, all of 35 layer beneficiaries and 4 adopter farms were investigated. Results showed that production of layer were 92, 129 and 163 per beneficiary for category I, II and III farms, respectively. On average, each adopter farm reared 145 number of birds. Annual egg production per 100 layers were higher (18329) in beneficiary farms than adopter farms (16992). Annual profitability of layer production for all beneficiary farms was TK. 13986.00. Annual employment opportunities for category I, II and III farmers were 69, 84 and 84 man- days. PMTIP has made a substantial impact on supplementary occupation in poultry business. The percentage changes in investment in poultry business, cash in hand and saving with banks have been increased by 977%, 2604% and 1430%. Drinking water from own tube-well source in layer beneficiary farms has been increased by 14% in post- project situation. In layer beneficiary farms, katcha latrines have been decreased by 20% and sanitary latrines have been increased by 3.3% in post- project situation. Consumption of chicken, eggs, vegetables, milk, pulses, fish and rice have been increased in post- project compared to pre- project situation. In layer beneficiary farms, household assets have been increased in post- project situation than pre- project. The school- going children of layer beneficiary have also been increased by 144% in post-project situation. It has facilitated employment and income earning opportunities to female beneficiaries and their participation in decision making on household expenditure, children education and membership of women in Union Council, Gram Sarker and NGOs have also been increased after the intervention by PMTIP. However, commercial layer packages have high motivation (200%) and adoption (132%) rate. All these evidences suggest that commercial layer packages introduced by PMTIP deserve expansion covering larger number of beneficiaries in other parts of the country.

To analyze productivity, profitability, creation of employment opportunities, family nutrition, household assets, savings and investment, health, education and women empowerment of beneficiary farms in the study areas.

A total of 35 layer beneficiaries in 3 Agro- ecological zones under the incentive coverage of PMTIP were investigated. In addition to that, 4 layer adopter farmers who willingly adopted those commercial layer packages were also investigated. Thus, in all 39 respondents were interviewed. For collection of data, a survey method was followed and a preliminary survey schedule was prepared and tested in Dinajpur sub- sites for finalization. After field test, necessary modifications and rearrangements were made in survey schedule. Data were collected from the records and accounts maintained by interviewing respondents. Principal Investigator and 2 Co- principal Investigators directly collected the data from the field. Data were collected during Nov.- Dec., 2003 and Jan.- Feb., 2004. Collected data were processed using Microsoft Excel Programme. Data were tabulated and analyzed following a partial budgeting method and impact assessment was carried out using pre and post project comparison. Because, the intervention was for short duration and such type of effect of intervention can better be measured in qualitative or descriptive reading rather than quantitative assessment. Therefore, data were analyzed using descriptive statistical tools like mean and percentage and nevertheless, one- way ANOVA including F- test was carried out wherever found appropriate for the analysis of data. In addition to that, comparative analysis both for beneficiary and adopter farms for production and financial performances were carried out while for socio- economic benefits and women empowerment, performances of beneficiary farms was only considered with perception that the performances of adopter farms, more or less, will follow same course of direction.

Commercial layer packages have created employment opportunities for unemployed family labour and generated family income for the beneficiaries. Socio- economic status on supplementary occupation, off- farm income, changes in livestock assets, dwelling houses, savings, sources of drinking water and types of latrine, occurrence of diseases and annual cost for treatment, monthly consumption of chicken, eggs, vegetables, milk, pulses, fish and rice, household assets and number of school going children have been improved after the adoption of the packages. Regarding women empowerment, involvement of women in participation in household expenditure, children education, membership of Union Council, Gram Sarker and NGOs have been increased in post- project situation. Commercial layer packages have high motivation (200%) and adoption (132%) rate indicating that they are highly popular and acceptable to the farmers. All these evidences suggest that commercial layer packages introduced by PMTIP deserve expansion covering larger number of beneficiaries in other parts of the country.
