An Economic Study on Commercial Broiler Farming in Different Agro-ecological Zones of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted in 4 different Agro- ecological Zones of Bangladesh with 25 broiler farmers to determine the productivity and profitability of commercial broiler farming during 2003- 2004. Results showed that feed cost constituted the highest cost (59%) for commercial broiler farming. The highest cost (TK. 193563) was incurred for package III followed by package II (Tk. 158786) and I (Tk. 126051) with an average of Tk. 159284. The highest income (Tk. 206484) and net returns (Tk. 12921) were accrued to package III. The benefit/ cost ratios for packages I, II, and III were 1:1.02, 1: 1.07 and 1:1.07 with an average of 1:1.05, respectively, indicating that they are economically profitable. Commercial broiler packages I, II and III have provided an annual employment opportunities to unemployed family members for 45, 58 and 67 man- days, respectively. Paikers were the major buyers (27%) of broilers on credit. The overall motivation and adoption rate of commercial broiler packages were 200% and 132%, respectively.

Objectives:

To determine the productivity, profitability, employment opportunities, marketing of broilers, annual price variations, motivation and adoption rate of broiler packages in some selected areas of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

A total of 25 broiler beneficiaries in 4 agro-ecological zones (Khulna, Bogra, Barisal and Sylhet) under the incentive coverage of Poultry Management Technique Improvement Project (PMTIP) were investigated. For collection of data, a preliminary survey schedule was prepared and tested in Dinajpur sub- sites for finalization. After field test, necessary modifications and rearrangements were made in the survey schedule. Data were collected from the records and accounts maintained by the interviewing respondents. The Principal Investigator and 2 Co- principal Investigators of the Project collected the data from the field. Data were collected during November- December 2003 and January- February 2004. In analyzing the data, Partial Budgeting Method was followed.

Achievement/Findings:

Feed cost constituted the highest cost for commercial broiler production. The highest cost of production was incurred for package III followed by package II and I. The highest income and net returns were accrued to package III. The benefit/ cost ratios were greater than unity for all packages indicating that they are profitable. Commercial broiler packages I, II and III have provided employment opportunities to the family members. Most of the beneficiaries sold broilers to Paikers on credit. Motivation and adoption rate of broiler packages were observed higher. All these evidences implied that commercial broiler packages deserve expansion throughout the country covering larger number of beneficiaries.
