Cage Culture of Indian Major Carp and Silver Carp at Different Stocking Rates in Kaptai Lake

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The yield and yield components of two spring barley cultivars of contrasting grain size were studied to investigate the effect of pre-anthesis shadin.J and detillering and post-anthesis thinning. Fifty per cent shading at maximum floret development stage has significantly reduced the grains per ear, individual grain weight and grain yield. Removal of tillers significantly increase the numbers grains per ear, individual grain waight and grain yield. Thinning at anthesis did not affect the yield and its components. The result suggests that the supply of assimilate was adequate during the period of grain development and that the p:>tenti al size of the grain and g rain yield were determined by some factors operating before anthesis.

Objectives:

To culture Indian major carps and silver carps in floating net cages in Kaptai lake to determine the. effects of the stocking density on growth.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted for a period of 12 months from 1 January to 31 December 1988, in ten floating ages at Kaptal reservoir, near Ranga mati town, Rangamati H ill Tracts. 1.5 em. fitted to a bamboo frame were used. The structure was kept afloat by means of empty oil drums. The size of the floating cages were 2m X 2m X 2m. The top of the structure 2m X 1.5m. These were arranged in two rows side by side. Two feeding trays were hung roosely in each pond and kept suspended 1m below the water surface. Experimental procedure : Stocking density was used as the only variable in this experiment. The response of variable was gain in weight. The expa riment was conducted in ten floating cages which were divided into five treatment blocks on the basis of stocking density, each with two replications. The stocking densities were10, 15, 20, 25 and 30/m in treatments I, II, Ill, IV, and and V respectively and stocking rations of different species given wer e 1 : 2.5: 2.5 : 4 for C. cat/s, L. rohita, C. mrigsla and H. mo/itrix respectively. For the convenience of the study the cages were numbered arbitrarily as StR-1, StR-2, StR-3, StR-4 and StR-5.

Achievement/Findings:

Results obtained from different stocking densities (10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 fish/m²) on composite culture of Cat/a, Cat/a, Labeo rohira, Cirrhinus mri· gala and Hypophthalmictyhs molicrix carried out in ten floating cages for a period of twelve months at Kaptai Iake are presented. Survival was generally more than 90 percent. The observed variations in growth in terms of weight exhibited under different stocking densities were statistically significant. The stoking rate of 10 and 15 fish/m² gave the best growth rate, while 25 and 30 fish/m² gave the highest production. Among the four different specfes, rohu showed best growth rate and production followed by silver carp.
