An attempt was made with 35 layer beneficiaries to analyze the magnitude of socio-economic changes in terms of socio-economic status and livelihood pattern of commercial layer packages developed by Poultry Management Technique Improvement Project (PMTIP) in 3 different agro-ecological Zones of Bangladesh. Results showed that Poultry Management Technique Improvement Project reflected a substantial impact on supplementary occupation in poultry business for layer beneficiaries. An annual employment opportunities created for category I (100 birds), II (150 birds) and III (200 birds) farmers were 69, 84 and 84 man-days, respectively. The changes in investment of poultry business, cash in hand and saving in banks were increased by 977%, 2604%and 1430%, respectively. Tendency of Drinking water from own tube-well was increased by 14%. Katcha latrines were decreased by 20% and sanitary latrines were increased by 3.3% due to positive intervention made by Poultry Management Technique Improvement Project. Consumption of chicken-meat, eggs, vegetables, milk, pulses, fish and rice was increased by 129%, 130% 7%, 14%, 3%, 9% and 9%, respectively. Household assets and health status were improved in post-intervention period. The number of school-going children of layer beneficiary was increased by 144% after intervention. Overall improvement in socio-economic conditions of beneficiary was 83%. All these evidence suggest that commercial layer packages introduced by Poultry Management Technique Improvement Project deserved expansion to cover a larger number of beneficiaries throughout the country.

To assess employment opportunities and changes in occupations of layer beneficiaries, household income, savings and investment, changes in livestock and household assets, changes in dwelling houses, sources of drinking water and types of latrines, family nutrition and health status, schooling of children and educational expenses, motivation and adoption rate of layer packages and finally, continuation of the layer farming.

There were in all 12, 11 and 12 layer beneficiaries in Dinajpur, Bogra and Barisal sub0sites, respectively. All those 35 layer beneficiaries under the incentive coverage of PMTIP were selected for investigation. For collection of data, a preliminary survey schedule was prepared and tested in Dinajpur sub-sites for finalization. After field test, necessary modifications and re arrangements were made in survey schedule. Data were collected from the records and accounts maintained by interviewing respondents. Principal Investigator and 2 Co-principal Investigators directly collected the data from the field. Data were collected during Nov.-Dec./2003 and Jan. Feb./2004. Data included employment opportunities and changes in occupations of layer beneficiaries, household income, savings and investment, changes in livestock and household assets, changes in dwelling houses, sources of drinking water and types of latrines, family nutrition, health status, schooling of children and educational expenses, motivation and adoption rate of layer packages and reasons for continuation of layer farming. In analyzing the data, pre and post-project analysis were carried out. Collected data were preprocessed using Microsoft Excel Programme. The socio-economic impact of commercial layer packages on beneficiaries was assessed by a situation "without" research (Pre-adoption), against an alternative situation "with" research (Post-adoption) comparisons. "With" and "without" method made a meaningful comparison of the baseline data with that of reference year on socio-economic changes of layer beneficiaries in the project areas. Data were tabulated and analyzed following a pre- and post project comparison. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical tools like mean and percentages.

Commercial layer packages created employment opportunities for unemployed family labour and increased family income for the beneficiaries. Socio-economic status concerning supplementary occupation, off-farm income, changes in livestock assets, houses, savings, sources of drinking water and types of latrine, occurrence of diseases and annual cost for treatment, monthly consumption of chicken, eggs, vegetables, milk , pulses, fish and rice, household assets and number of school going children were improved after the adoption of the technology packages. Regarding the socio-economic condition, 83% percent of layer beneficiary reported that their socio-economic conditions were improved after intervention made by the project. These evidence suggest that commercial layer packages introduced by PMTIP deserve expansion throughout the w hole country to cover larger number of beneficiaries for improving their socio economic status and livelihood.
