Effect of Farm Categories on Prevalence of Goat Diseases and Financial Loss Under Scavenging System of Rearing in Some Selected Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted on 250 goat farms to analyze the prevalence of goat diseases and financial loss incurred therein. Results showed that mortality of goat due to diseases differ significantly (p>0.05) on treatment of diseased goat. The goats were mostly infected by Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), Goat pox, Blot/ Tympany, Parasitic diseases, Haemorrhaegic Septicemia (H.S) and Malnutrition. The morbidity and mortality of goat were found 24% and 11 %, respectively. The highest mortality (86%) was due to Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR). Treatment cost per diseased goat was Tk. 46. Financial loss due to death of goat per affected farm and all farms were Tk. 881 and Tk. 338, respectively. Therefore, disease control measures should be strengthened for profitable goat rearing.

Objectives:

1. To know the prevalence of diseases and goat mortality by farm categories,

2. To estimate the financial loss due to goat diseases (death loss and treatment loss) by farm categories,

3. To identify the nature of treatment and extent of veterinary services received by those farms.

Methodology:

For this study 5 districts namely, Mymensingh, Dinajpur, Jessore, Comilla and Bogra were selected. A survey was conducted on 250 goat- raising farm households taking 50 from each of the selected districts. Five villages from each of those districts were selected considering concentration of goat population. Data were collected randomly from 10 goat raisers from each of the selected villages. The goat raising farms were grouped into three categories depending on landholding: (i) medium farms (2.50- 7.49 acres), (ii) small farms (0.50- 2.49 acres) and (iii) landless farms (0.0- 0.49 acres). Of the selected farms, there were 32 medium farms, 123 small farms and 95 landless farms. There was no large farm in the randomly selected samples. Data were collected using pre- designed and pre- tested survey schedule. The Field Assistants were given proper training on the symptoms of various goat diseases so that they can properly identify diseases. Data for the year 2001 were collected by a single visit. A second visit was made to some households for collecting missing information. The survey was conducted during January - April 2002. Chi- square test was carried out for better precision of data to determine the prevalence of goat diseases and goat mortality.

Achievement/Findings:

Goat is vulnerable to various diseases, which badly affect the economy of small and landless farmers who rear about 85% of goat. Among the goat diseases, Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) was identified as the most fatal. In 51% cases veterinary facilities were limited with prescription only. Therefore, veterinary facilities need to be enhanced and disease control measure should be strengthened for profitable goat rearing.
