Characterization of Palmyra Palm (borassus Flabellifer) Wood for Working and Finishing Properties.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Working and finishing properties of wood are highly important in any wood working of its selection for particular utilization. This study reports on working and finishing properties of palmyra palm (Borassus flabellifer) wood. The working properties were carried out in two different methods, namely: machine and hand tools. In machining and hand tools operation, the evaluation was based on frequency of occurrence of defect free samples. The defects were visually observed and the percentage of defect free samples was determined for each test. Finishing qualities were also evaluated with the application of two different types of polishing materials, viz., shellac and carpa. The result of this study introduces that palmyra palm wood is suitable for construction materials and medium grade furniture materials.

Objectives:

1. To assess the suitability of palmyra palm wood for furniture and construction materials.

2. To decrease the pressure on traditional timber species.

Methodology:

Palmyra palm (Borassus flabellifer) wood was procured in the log form. This log was converted to 25 mm planks by plane sawing in a 122 cm manually feed band saw. Sawing performance was recorded. The planks were seasoned to less than 15% moisture content. The dried planks were dressed and 20 samples of 19 mm × 125 mm × 1220 mm in size were prepared from each species. All the test samples were sound free from all defects including knots, stain, incipient decay, surface checks and end splits. For different experimental conditions, each sample was cut into three parts which are 19 mm × 125 mm × 914 mm, 19 mm × 49 mm × 306 mm and 19 mm × 76 mm × 306 mm in size. First and second parts of the sample are used for the test of planning and turning properties respectively. The other part is used for the test of boring, mortising and shaping properties.The working properties were carried out in two different methods, viz., machines and hand tools. Ten samples were tested with machine and ten samples with hand tools. After completion of each machine test, the samples were examined visually to sort out the defect-free samples. In each machine test, the samples were examined for torn grain, fuzzy grain, raised grain, chipped grain, chip mark, tear out, broken corner and roughness. The percentage of defect free sample was considered to be the measure of the machining and working qualities.The tests were carried out in accordance with ASTM standards: D-1666-64;1971 with certain deviation because of limitations of available equipment. Similar tests were carried out using carpenter’s hand tools.In finishing test, two types of polish viz., shellac and carpa were applied and performance was recorded on the basis of the surface finish.

Achievement/Findings:

Palmyra palm wood is found to be medium in respect of sawing quality. Machining and hand tools properties indicate that this wood is suitable for construction materials and medium grade furniture materials. In the finishing property, palmyra palm wood shows poor finishing quality.
