Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Characterization of wood for working and finishing properties is highly significant in any woodworking of its selection for certain purposes. This study reports on working and finishing properties of lambu (Khaya sp.) and jhau (Casuarina equisetifolia) wood. The working properties were carried out in two different methods, namely: machine and hand tools. In machining and hand tools operation, the evaluation was based on frequency of occurrence of defect free samples. The defects were visually observed and the percentage of defect free samples was determined for each test. Finishing qualities were also evaluated with the application of two different types of polishing materials, viz., shellac and carpa. The findings of this study introduce that lambu wood is suitable for medium grade furniture and construction materials and jhau wood is suitable for furniture and construction materials.

Objectives:

To assess the suitability of lambu and jhau wood for making furniture and construction materials.

Methodology:

Two wood species, namely- lambu and jhau was procured in the log form. This log was converted to 25 mm planks by plane sawing in a 122 cm manually feed band saw. Sawing performance was recorded. The planks were seasoned to less than 15% moisture content. The dried planks were dressed and 20 samples of 19 mm × 125 mm × 1220 mm in size were prepared from each species. All the test samples were sound free from all defects including knots, stain, incipient decay, surface checks and end splits. For different experimental conditions, each sample was cut into three parts which are 19 mm × 125 mm × 914 mm, 19 mm × 49 mm × 306 mm and 19 mm × 76 mm × 306 mm in size. First and second parts of the sample are used for the test of planning and turning properties respectively. The other part is used for the test of boring, mortising and shaping properties.The working properties were carried out in two different methods, viz., machines and hand tools. Ten samples were tested with machine and ten samples with hand tools. After completion of each machine test, the samples were examined visually to sort out the defect-free samples. In each machine test, the samples were examined for torn grain, fuzzy grain, raised grain, chipped grain, chip marked, tear out, broken corner and roughness. The percentage of defect free sample was considered to be the measure of the machining and working qualities.The tests were carried out in accordance with ASTM standards: D-1666-64; 1971 with certain deviation because of limitations of available equipment. Similar tests were carried out using carpenter’s hand tools.Two types of polish viz., shellac and carpa were applied and performance was recorded on the basis of the surface finish.

Achievement/Findings:

Sawing quality of jhau and lambu wood are found to be medium and easy respectively. Machining and hand tools properties indicate that jhau wood is suitable for furniture, turnery works and construction materials and lambu wood is acceptable for medium grade furniture materials. Jhau wood is found to be excellent in respect of finishing property. On the other hand, the same property of lambu wood shows fair quality.
