Leather shavings (LS) is a tanning industry by- product, rich in protein (60- 90%) but contain high levels of Cr. De- chroming method has been developed to use LS as an animal protein source for feeding poultry. This trial was, thus designed to determining the nutritive value of collagen meal, the de- chromed LS in broilers (Trial I); and also to determine the effect of replacing graded levels of commercial protein concentrate (CPC) with CM on the performance of broilers (Trial II). In Trial I, 24 healthy 7 weeks old broiler birds of both sexes having average weight of 2.7 ± 0.032 kg were divided into three groups and reared in metabolic cages for 14 days. All birds were on a standard broiler finisher diet for the initial 10 days followed by a 24 h of fasting and glucose feeding (40 g/ bird) period. Individual bird was then tube fed with either of CM, CPC or with glucose. Droppings of individual bird were collected on 24 h basis from fasting till the end of the trial. In Trial II, 98 straight run STARBRO broiler chicks were reared on a standard diet and management for two weeks. They were then randomly allocated to 7 iso- caloric (3050 kcal/ kg) rations. In ration A, protein supply was from the egg albumen (control). Ration B, was devoid of any protein source, and was used for determining the endogenous nutrient loss. In rations C, D, E, F and G; 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% of the CPC was replaced with CM on weight for weight basis. Growth rate and digestibility of all seven diets were measured. Crude protein (CP) content of CM and CPC were of 80 and 48% and the corresponding CP digestibility was 59 and 61 % respectively. In adult broiler, fasting and basal (glucose fed) N excretions were 474 ± 56.9 mg/kg W.75/ d and 316 ± 35.6 mg/ kg W.75/ d respectively. With increasing levels of CM inclusion, DM intake of broiler bird reduced curvilinearly. True digestibilities of CP were 43, 47, 61, 59 and 51 %, respectively for diets where 0 (diet C), 25 (diet D), 50 (diet E), 75 (diet F) and 100 (diet G)% of CPC were replaced with CM. Live weight gain, feed conversion ratio and protein efficiency ratio (PER) of broiler birds decreased with the increasing levels of CPC replacement by CM. Compared to that of CPC, CM may be less palatable and may also be deficient in limiting amino acids content. It may be concluded that CM as such can not quantitatively replace the CPC for feeding broiler. However, fortification of CM with deficient (if any) amino acids and with palatizer may improve its utilization efficiency in broiler.

1. To determining the nutritive value of collagen meal in poultry,

2. To determining the effect of replacing commercial protein with graded levels of CM on the performance of broiler.

Raw leather shavings were collected from the local tannery. Raw shavings was initially hydrolyzed for 48 h with 14% (w/w) Ca (OH)2 solution (14 kg Ca (OH)2 per 100 kg shavings) followed by 48 h hydrolysis with 12% (w / w) H2SO4 (12 kg H2SO4 per 100 kg shavings), and then washed in running water. Hydrolyzed material was then minced and mixed with wheat bran (5%, w/w) for manufacturing CM. Two trials were conducted where, nutritive value of CM were determined in the broiler bird (Trial I) and the effect of replacing commercial protein with graded levels of CM on the performance of broiler (Trial II). Two types of test materials were used for the trial, a commercial protein concentrate (CPC) and collagen meal (CM). Sun- dried materials were grounded at 1.5 mm sieve in a hammer mill. Commercial glucose (dextrose) from Glaxo Bangladesh Ltd. was used for the trial. Both test materials and homogenized fresh excreta were used for chemical analysis. Dry matter (DM) was determined by oven drying the fresh material at 100 ? for 48 h. Sample used for determining the DM was then ignited in a Muffle Furnace at 700°C for 3 hours for determining the ash. Nitrogen content of the test material and fresh excreta was determined by using the Kjeldhal procedure. Effect of feeding graded levels of collagen meal (CM) as a replacer of commercial protein concentrate (CPC) was determined in broiler chicks. Seven iso- caloric (3050 kcal/kg) rations were used for the trial. In ration A, protein supply was from the egg albumen and was used as the control. Ration B, was devoid of any protein source, and was used for determining the endogenous nutrient loss. In rations C, D, E, F and G had 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% of the CPC replaced with CM on weight for weight basis. All the samples of mixed feed, residue left and the droppings were analyzed for dry matter, ash organic matter, Kjeldhal N, crude fiber and ether extract. Mineral content were determined by using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The data collected were subjected to statistical analysis using the general linear model.

It may be concluded that CM as such can not quantitatively replace the CPC for feeding broiler. However, fortification of CM with deficient (if any) amino acids and with palatizer may improve its utilization efficiency in broiler. Thus, further study is necessary to overcome the factors that limiting the utilization of CM as feed for poultry.
