Credit Operation of Selected Brdb Cooperatives of Madhabpur Upazila Under Habiganj District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study attempts to examine different aspects of credit operation of some BRDB cooperatives in Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj district. The coverage of the credit was not sufficient and per head credit sanction was not adequate. Most of the credit was utilized for production purposes except by small farmers who spent a substantial amount of it for family expenses. Small farmers per hectare crop production through the use of credit was higher than that of medium and large farmers. The study suggested to minimize inherent problems of credit operations.

Objectives:

The present study was undertaken to have a close look on how the credit operations are being done in the BRDB system and to examine which category of farmers are being benefited most.

Methodology:

Five Krlshak Samabaya Samities (KSS) out of 25 KSS under the Central Cooperative Association at the Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj district were selected purposively. From. the five se ected societies 76 (51%) loanee member-farmers and 74 (57%) non-loanee member-farmers were selected at random. The sampled loanee farmers were interviewed in the study. The non-loanee farmers were classified into small (up to 0.81 ha), medium (up to 1.62 ha) and large ( 1.63 ha and above ) categories. Accordingly 14 small farmers, 42 medium farmers and 20 large farmers were interviewed in the study. The non-loanee members of the societies were sampled mainly to examine their pattern of crop production in comparison to the loanee members. Three different types of schedules : one for managers, one for loanee-members the other for the non-loanee members were prepared for collecting the required information. Collected data were edited and analysed as per aims and objectives of the study. Tabular analysis including averages and percentages were used for comparing changes of farm size over the years under study

Achievement/Findings:

On the basis of the findings of loan operations of BRDB cooperatives, it may be concluded that the overall performance of the selected KSS were more or less good. The KSS provided the member-farmers with short term credit facilities. The member farmers by effectively utilizing the credit were able to increase their farm production and thereby their family income. Their higher income helped them to raise their standard of living. Only production loan was not sufficient to meet the farmers requirement. So, in addition to the supply of production loan both capital and consumption loan should be provided to the farmers. Loan should be provided adequately and timely. Utilization of loan should be ensured by its proper supervision. Members should be trained properly so that they become more akin to the use of cooperative credit on their farm production and thereby a feeling of distinction is created over others in the Iocality.
