Manipulation of Seeding Date and Seedling Age to Avoid Flash Flood Damage of Boro Rice at the Northeastern Haor Areas in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Flash flood (20-1 00 cm) ma y damage Boro rice at the haor area in the Northeastern Bangladesh. Early crop establishment (late October to early November seeding) t o avoid the flood is not possible as the crop might encounter low night temperature in late February to early Marc h at its reproductive phase. There fore, to find out a technology to a void the stress, three experiments were conducted in Boro sea son from 2003-2005, manipulating seeding date and seedling age. Grain yield was reduced significantly in late seeding. The highest yield could be achieved using 15-30-clay-old seedlings. The growth duration increased with the increase of seedling age and decrease of apparently low minimum temperature. A day increase of seedling a e would increase half a day of g rowth duration . Therefore, a safe harvest (by 30 April) is dependent to seedling age and nature of low temperature in the cropping sea son. Forty-five-day old seedling s from mid-November seeding and 30-day-old seedlings from early December seeding of BRRI dhan29 could yield the safe harvest. BRRI dhan28 was quite safe even up to mid-December seeding provided 30-day-old seedlings be used.

Objectives:

To observe the influence of seeding date and seedling age on yield without any risk of flash flood at the maturity.

Methodology:

Experiment 1. The study was conducted with BRRI dhan29 (long duration) following two crop establishment methods: directly seeding of sprouted seeds and transplanting of 30-day-old seedling s. Two operations: sowing of sprouted seeds directly onto the experim.ental field and sowing of sprouted seeds onto seed bed to raise seedlings up to 30-days were done on the same date . The seeding dates were 7 and 21 November 2002, 5 and 21 December 2002. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replication s. Experiment 2. This study was conducted with BRRI dhan28 (short duration) and BRRI dhan29. Seeding with sprouted seeds was done as in experiment 1. Thirty and 60-day-old seedlings were transplanted at 25- x 15 cm spacing. The experiment was conducted in a split-split plot design with three replications. Seedling age was in the main plot. The sub plot and sub-sub-plot were assigned to variety and seeding date respectively. Experiment 3. Sprouted seed s of BRRI dhan29 were seeded on 21 November 2004 and 5 December 2004. Fifteen, 30, 45, 60 and 75-day-old seedlings were transplanted in a split plot-design with three replications. The main plots were assigned to seeding dates and sub-plots to seedling age. Fertilizer and all other relevant cultural practices were followed as per BRRI recommendation. Data on yield, flowering date, and minimum temperature during the growth period , flowering, maturity date and growth duration were recorded. Yield data was analyzed using IRRISTAT (a statistical tool) developed by IRRI. As the variation among the replication s was minimum or none among the growth duration s no analysis was performed.

Therefore, a safe harvest (by 30 April) is dependent on seedling age and nature of low temperature in the cropping season. Forty-five-day old seedling from mid November seeding and 30-day-old seedling from early December seeding of BRRI dhan29 could yield a safe harvest. In contrast, relatively short duration BRRI dhan28 was quite safe even up to mid-December seeding provided 30-day-old seedlings are used in haor areas of Bangiadesh.
