Performance of Mustard Mutants at Differ Ent Locations

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institutee of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during 1985-86 to evaluate the performance of two newly developed mustard mutants in different locations of Bangladesh. Results revealed that the mutant BINA-2 produced the highest yield in three out of five locations. This mutant, however, had no significant difference with the other mutant BII\IA-1 and the mother variety YS-52. Among the three varieties used as checks, Tori 7 produced the lowest yield in all the locations inspit of its higher number of siliqua/ plant which was actually compensated by the lower number of seeds/siliqua.

Objectives:

This experiment was, therefore, under taken to evaluate the yield performance of two newly developed mutants in different locations.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in five different locations namely Mohangonj, Camilla, Bogra, Jessore and Dinajpur during rabi season of 1985-86. The mutants were BINA 1 and BINA 2 and the control varieties were YS52, Sampad and Tori 7. Data on seed yield was collected from the whole plot but all the yield components namely plant height, number of primary branches, number of secondary branches, number of siliqua per plant and number of seeds per siliqua were collected from ten randomly selected plants from each location. These were analysed statistically and the mean values were adjudged by OMRT.

Achievement/Findings:

For all the yield components, significant variations were observed both among varieties and among locations except the number of seed /siliqua. BINA 1 was found to show the highest plant height in all the locations except Bogra with a significant difference with Tori 7. The number of primary branches/ plant varied among the llocation for all the varieties except BINA 1 and sampad, but there was no variations among the varieties within a particular location. The number of secondary branches did not show any regular pattern of variation. The number of siliqua/plant varied both among varieties and among locations. The variety Tori 7 was found to produced the highest number of siliqua/ plant in all the locations. lnspit of its high siliqua number the low yield was perhaps due to its lowest number of seeds in all the locations although there was no significant difference for this character either among cultivars or among locations.
