A total of 1006 hatching eggs were collected from White Leghorn, Barred Plymouth Rock,  Rhode Island Red and White Rock (30 breeder hens per Line) in three holding period (I = 9 - 12th  day, 2= 5 - 8th day and 3= 1 - 4th day) following AI from individually caged hens and were hatched to compare hatching parameters among lines. Percent of unfertile egg was highest in WR (8.33), intermediate in RIR (6.57) & BPR (4.81) and lowest in WLH (3.98) but had no significant different among line. The percent of dead embryo having significant different (p<0.05) among line but not in holding period. The highest percent dead embryo was found in WLH (6.75), intermediate in WR (5.64) and lower in RIR (2.31) & BPR (1.85). The percent of culled egg had no significant different among line and holding period and highest in BPR (5.02), medium or similar in RIR (3.82) and WLH (2.27) and lowest WR (0.68). The percent of hatch fail chick having significances different (p<0.05) among line but not in holding period. Percent of sound chick had significant different (p<0.01) among the line and holding period (p<0.05). The highest percent of sound chick was found in WR (92.33) and lowest in RIR (81.20). The fertility percentage had no significant different among line and holding period and highest in BPR (93.41) and lowest in WR (88.79). Percent hatchability on setting egg had significant different (p<0.01) among the line and holding period (p<0.05). The highest hatchability was found in WR (84.84) and lowest in RIR (74.85). Percent hatchability on fertile egg had significant different (p<0.0 I) among the line and holding period. The highest hatchability was found in WR (90.14) and lowest in WLH (79.13). There were some correlations among different hatchability traits depending on genotype within line. The correlations were more profound among WLH.

The study was conducted at Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI), Savar, and Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period of August to September, 2004. Four different pure lines namely White Leghorn (WLH), White Rock (WR), Rhode Island Red (RIR) and Barred Plymouth Rock (BPR) were considered to investigate hatchability traits in this experiment. A total of 1006 hatching eggs (30 breeder hens per Line) were collected for incubation in holding period (1 = 9 - 12th day, 2= 5 - 8th day and 3= 1 - 4th day). The birds were individually caged in an open-sided house providing a cage space of 400 cm2 per birds and the cocks were trained for artificial semen collection. The birds were exposed to natural day light of 12 hours/ day and 4 hours artificial light per day. All birds ( both male and female) fed ad-labium on diets containing 17.84% crude protein (CP), 2780 kcal/kg metabolizable energy (ME)  2.96% calcium (Ca) per kg diet (LP ration formulation). Semen from each cock was collected twice a week in the later part of the day. Each hen was also inseminated twice a week throughout the experimental period. For each hen 0.05ml undiluted semen was used for insemination each time. Hatching eggs were collected twice a day (10:00-11:00 and 15:00-16:00 h). Good shaped and sound shell eggs were selected and dipped in powerful disinfectant solution before holding and storage. One thousand and four (1006) hatching eggs i.e. 240 from WLH, 219 from BPR, 264 from RIR and 283 from WR were collected over the whole collection periods of 12 days. The eggs were collected and stored in a room at 16°C and 80% relative humidity (RR) maintaining three pre-incubation holding period (HP) groups-1 = 9 - 12th day, 2= 5 - 8th day and 3= 1 - 4th day. Proper cleaning, disinfection and fumigation were done before setting eggs. Eggs from a hen were set adjacent to each other on the same day. Number of eggs set for each individual sire-hen group of line was recorded and the eggs were, turned automatically programmed device 2 hourly. Setting temperature and humidity were 99.7 - 100°F and 80-85% respectively up to 18 days of incubation. Data were analyzed for ANOVA using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with the help of a computer package program (SPSS). Significant differences to compare mean values of all parameters among the treatments were detected by Least Significant Differences (LSD).

Considering the overall hatchability traits it is concluded that pure lines have little effect on hatchability of fertile eggs but holding periods have more effect on hatchability of fertile eggs. The WLH appeared to have more positive correlation hatchability parameters than the other lines.
