Effect of Plant Population and Leaf Prunning on Yield and Yield Attributes of Maize

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Maize was grown for two seasons with population of 66 600, 33 300 and 16 600 plants ha^-1 and leaves were prunned to none, half and full length at 6-, 9-, and 12-leaf stages retaining three uppermost leaves intact to study green fodder yield, grain yield and yield attributes and translocation of pre-silking reserves towards grain yield. Plants in higher population yielded 30-120% more fodder than lower population. Prunning of leaves in full length yielded 77 more fodder than prunnng in half length. Number of grains per co b and 1000 grain weight was higher in lower population. Prunning of leaves decreased the number of gr ins per cob and 1000 grain weight. Grain yield was 15-11 S% higher in higher population and prunning decreased grain yield by 28-61 1. Nearly 20-30% of the pre-silking stem reserves were translocated to the grain depending on plant population and severity of prunning.

Objectives:

To explores the possibility of getting green fodder as well as grain by growing plants in different populations.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Hathazari, Chittagong during rabi (December '86 to March '87) and kharif (April to July '87) seasons. In both the seasons the experiment was laid out in split-plot design with three plant populations viz, 66 600, 33 300. and 16 600 (contr ol) ha^-1in the main plots and three prunning treatments viz. none (P_O), half leaf cut (P ) and full leaf cut (P_I) in the subplots of 5m x 3m. The treatments were replicated three times. Leaf prunning was done at 6-, 9-, and 12-leaf stages of the crop and in all cases three uppermost leaves were retained. The land was prepared well and fertilized with 100, 60 and 40 kg ha^-1 of N, P₂0₅ and K ₂0 respectively. To get the desired plant population seeds were sown in 20, 40, and 60 cm apart in 75 cm wide rows. The plots were kept weed free and water was applied when necessary. At silking stage of the crop a subsample of five plants was harvested at the ground level from each plot and dry weight of the same was taken after drying to a constant weight at 85⁰C. for 72 hours. At maturity plant height, ear height, cob length and number of grains per cob were taken . Weight of 1000 grains was taken at 15% moisture and cobs were harvested - from inner two rows. Stover yield was taken from a sub sample of I0 plants and dried to a constant weight at 85 C. Translocation of pre-silking stem reserves towards grain weight is calculated after partial modifications of Gallagher et al., ( 1975)'s formula as, %Translocation={6TDM -GDM)/ 6GDM) x 100 where, 6TDM is the increase in total dry matter and 6 GDM is the increase in grain dry matter from silking to maturity. Data were analysed using standard statistical procedure.
