Comparative Efficacy of Four Anthelmintics Against Natural Infection of Gastro-intestinal Nematodes in Cattle

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Comparative efficacy of four anthelmintics namely Nemafax, Systa mex, Banminth-11 and powdered paddagloncha was Investigated against natural infection with gastro-intestinal nematodes of cattle In Bangladesh. Systamex showed maximum efficacy of (85.71%) followed by Nemafex (84.99%), Banminth-11 (76.93%) and powdered paddagloncha (55.23%).

Objectives:

To investigate the anthelmintics of the plant paddagloncha ( Tinos pora cordifolia ). The plant is easily available everywhere in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Anthelmintic trials were conducted in the cattle naturally infected with nematodes, faecal samples were collected from each animals and put in small plastic bags and brought to the laboratory after afixing a proper identification tag and stored in a refrigerator at a temperature of 4⁰C from three villages namely Suitakhali. Boyra, Chakchattrapur and Campus of B. A. U. in Mymensingh districts of Bangladesh. Examination was done within 24 hours of collection.

Achievement/Findings:

The examination of cattle indicated that most of the cattle were in poor health, weak and rough coat, bottle jaw condition was also observed in a number of cattle. The faeces were soft and diarrhoeic, the hind quarters and tail were soiled. The mortality was about 10-30%. The development of soft faeces may be due to catarrhal abomasitis, and enteritis. The intestinal hepatic and renal lesion may be due to toxins produced by the parasites. In this comparative anthelmintic treatment it was observed that the poor farmers of Bangladesh, who are not able to purchase patent drugs of high cost (nemafax, systamex, banminth-11) for their animal health, they can easily prepare the powdered paddagloncha (even without cost ) for their animals according to the directions of field veterinarians. [t will help to check the mortality of the cattle. Further studies needed for the active principle of this herb and pharmaco-kinetics studies would be helpful.
