The study was conducted to asses the growth and meat production performances of Bengal sheep under semi-intensive management. Data of individual animal were recorded on birth weight, weaning weight, growth rate at different ages and generations of Bengal sheep of three different origins (3 regions). Nine intact ram of about 12 months of age were slaughtered where, three were from Barind, three from Jamuna river basin and three from coastal region. The result reveals that the birth weight of lamb was significantly (p<0.01) higher in Barind type (1.70±0.11) compared to Coastal (1.40±0.07) and Jamuna type (1.34±0.05). Besides, male lamb had significantly (p<0.001) higher birth weight than female except in sheep from Coastal type. Weaning weight was also significantly (p<0.05) higher in Barind type (10.40±0.59) than that of the other two types. It was also revealed that the growth rate up to 6 (73 g/d) and 9 month (57 g/d) were significantly (P<0.05) higher in Barind type compared to other two types of sheep. Slaughter weight, hot carcass yield and dressing percentage did not differ significantly (P>0.05) due to types of Bengal sheep. No significant (p>0.05) differences was found in weight (percentage) of various wholesale cuts but the eye muscle yield (P<0.05) and percentage yield of breast and flap (P<0.05) obtained from carcasses of different types of Bengal sheep differed significantly. Eye muscle yield was higher in ram from Jamuna river basin types (112g) followed by ram in costal types (100g) and Barind types (82 g) respectively. Leg (leg chump and hind leg chump) constituted the major whole sale cut represented almost uniformly (35% to 37%) in ram from three types of Bengal sheep followed by square cut shoulder, loin, rack, breast and flap, and neck with corresponding values of 26.3 to 26.86%, 10.68 to 12.14%, 9.92 to 12.22%, 7.79 to 8.18% and 7.06 to 7.79% respectively. The weight of lung (191.48 g), spleen (65.68 g), and testicles (238 g) were remarkably (P<0.05) higher in rams of Jamuna river basin type sheep than those of rams from Coastal and Barind types. However, the yield of liver, heart, trachea, gut and caul fat and perinephric and channel fat had no significant (P>0.05) differences in rams from three types of Bengal sheep. It can be concluded that under semi-intensive management, the production performances of Barind type of sheep is superior in 1st generation compared to sheep of coastal and Jamuna type. Further research with larger population is needed for complete evaluation of detailed carcass yield characteristics of different types of Bengal sheep.

To evaluate the growth and meat production performances of Bengal sheep of three different origins (region) reared under semi-intensive management.

The study was conducted in the Goat Research Farm of Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute, Savar, Dhaka. Data of individual animal were recorded on birth weight, weaning weight, growth rate at different ages and generations of Bengal sheep of three different origins (Barind areas, Jamuna river basin and Coastal region) for the period of 2002-2005. Nine intact ram of about 12 months of age were slaughtered, taking three from each of Barind, Jamuna river basin and from coastal region. Prior to slaughter, overnight fasted sheep were weighed. Before slaughter different body measurements including shoulder (wither) height, heart girth, body length (pin bone to point of shoulder) and neck circumferences were recorded. Sheep were slaughtered according to 'Halal' method by severing the major vessels of the throat by a transverse cut. Blood was collected and weighed in a pre-weighed bucket. Skin was removed by conventional flaying method. The carcass was hoisted from its hock at a convenient height. Head was removed at the oxipito-atlantal joint and feet below the carpals (knee bones) in the fore legs and tarsals in the hind legs. The entire digestive tract was weighed before and after removing the digesta. Data were recorded on live weight, warm carcass weight, dressing percentage, weight of blood, visceral organs (liver, lung, kidney, heart, spleen), weight of head, feet, skin and digestive tract. Carcass was then cut according to Australian lamb cuts. The animals were reared under semi-intensive management and allowed 6 hours grazing from 8.00 to 14.00 h. daily. After grazing, sheep were fed Napier grass and urea molasses straw ad libitum. Concentrate mixture (17% CP; 11 MJ ME/kg DM) were supplied 2% of their live weight, offered in equal half twice daily at 8.00 am. and 4 pm. The data were subjected to statistical analysis using technique of completely randomized design according to Steel and Torrie. Analysis of variance was performed applying the univariate General Linear Model (GLM) procedure of SPSS 9.0 for Window to compare the differences in carcass traits among the sheep of different regions and types.

It could be concluded that under semi intensive management, the production performances of Barind type sheep is superior among 1st generation compare to sheep from coastal and Jamuna type. Though slaughter weight, carcass weight and dressing percentage of meat in rams from Barind, coastal and Jamuna type had no significant differences. But the average slaughter weight was found to be higher in rams from Jamuna type and rams from Barind type found lower slaughter weight. This difference might be due to the data from comparatively less population. So, larger population is needed for complete evaluation of detailed carcass yield characteristics among different types of Bengal sheep.
