Reaction of Tomato and Some Other Host Plants to Pseudomonas Solanacearum

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An inoculation was done at Bangladesh Agricultural University, Horticulture Farm. Four weeks old seedlings of each cultivar were transplanted in rows and in three replicated plots. Recommended dose of Pk were applied at the time to transplanting of seedling and N was applied as top dressing 2 weeks after transplanting. The plant spacing was 45 x 60cm. Thirty seed rings f or each cultivar for inoculation and similar number for control were kept. Diseased tomato plants were collected from other plots. The bacterium was purified, cultured in TZC medium and the inoculum was prepared from the pink colonies suscepted to be a virulent pathogen of P. solsna cearum (Martin el a/. 1981). The inoculum density was 106 bacterial ce II/ ml. The seedlings ware inoculated 4 weeks after transplanting with 48h old bacterial culture suspension. One mi. of bacterial suspension was poured in the soil at the base of the plants.

Objectives:

To observe the reaction in causing wilt disease among the three tomato cultivars.

Methodology:

The host range experiment was, carried with some selected hosts in pot culture. Indian spinach, cucumber,· white gourd, sweet gourd, ribbed.gourd, sponge gourd, bitter gourd,·brinjal, lady s finger and data (Ama< thus sp ) were included . Achievement/Findings:

The number of wilted plants belonging to the resistant grades Increased very slowly from 5 days to 20 days, after Inoculation but in the susceptible grades the number of wilted plants increased at very high rate during the same period.
