The system of rice intensification (SRI) and traditional cultivation practices along with their modifications in respect of seed ling age, s pacing, irrigation and fertilizer management were evaluated in Boro (irrigated dry season rice) seasons of 2001-02 and 2003-04 at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI). Traditional practice with SRI recommended younger seedlings increased 5-11% grain yield and 6-20% gross margin of Boro rice over traditional practice, while grain yield and gross margin s were 27-71% and 62-398% higher over SRI practice, respectively. Weeding cost in SRI practice was increased by 25-59% over tradition a l practice though total variable cost was increased by only 1-3%. Cost for irrigation water management under SRI was 20% l owe r than traditional water management though labor cost for irrigation was 50% higher in SRI water management than traditional one. The SRI practice for growing Boro rice was not advantageous over traditional practice in terms of grain yield and economic return.

To compare the productivity of SRl and traditional methods for Boro rice and to assess the agro-economic performance of SRI technique in Boro rice cultivation.

Two field experiments were conducted in Boro 2001-02 and 2003-04 at BRRI , Gazipur.  In 2001-02 ten cultivation practices including SRI and traditional cultivation practices along with their modification in respect of seedling age, spacing, irrigation and fertilizer management were evaIuated in RCB design with three replications. The cultivation practices were: (T 1 ) - SRI practice ( 15-day-old single seedling hill-1 transplanted at 30- x 30-cm spacing within 30 minutes of uprooting. No chemical fertilizer was applied: well decomposed cowdung was applied @ I0 t ha-1 as basal. The field was kept moist , no standing water was allowed until the reproductive stage. From panicle initiation to hard dough stage 1-2 cm standing water was kept in the field. Frequent weeding was done to keep the soil well aerated), T2 - SRI practice with closer spacing (20- x 20-cm), T3 - SRI practices with 40-day-old seedlings, T4- SRI practice with traditional water management (in each irrigation 8-10 cm water was applied three days after disappearance of water from the field and continued throughout the vegetative stage up to hard doug  stage), T 5 - SRI practice with traditional fertilizer management (only chemical fertilizers @ 120- 26-60- 13-4 kg ha-l of N -P-K-S­ Zn, respectively. All fertilizers except N were applied as basal. N fertilizer was top dressed in three equal split s at 15 days after transplanting (DAT), 35 DAT and 5 days before panicle initiation , DB PI), T6 - traditional practice with 30- x 30-cm s pacing, T7 - traditional practice with 15-day-old seed lings, T8- traditional practice with SRI water management, T9 - traditional practice with no chemical fertilizer application (cowdung only) and T 10 - traditional practice (40-day-old 2-3 seedlings hill-1 were transplanted at 20- x 20- cm spacing in well puddled land. Eight to 10 cm standing water was applied at a time and next irrigation was made three days after disappearance of water from  the field and such conditions maintained from the tillering to the hard dough stages. Only chemical fertilizers @ 120-26-60- 13- 4 " kg ha-  o f N-P-K-S-Zn, respectively was used. All the fertilizers except N were applied as basal. N fertilizer was topdresscd in three equal splits at 15, 35 DAT and 5 DBPI. The field was kept weed free until PI stage by two hand weeding. BRRI 100 Sa h;t c/ a/
