Inatke Digestibility and Retention Time of Native Grasses by Goats

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Four black Bengal Goats were fed Native grass hay ad libitum to determine feed intake, digestibility, nutrient balance and retention time of nutrients in the rumen. All goats consumed approximately 3% of their body weight which is close to their potential capacity. Except sulphur, significant differences were observed for digestibility of nutrients among the goats possibly due to small number of replications used. They also showed positive nitrogen and sulphur balance and retained nutrients between 16 and 22 hrs.

Objectives:

This programme was under taken to evaluate composition of the native grasses commonly available for grazing and their utilization by goats

Methodology:

The native grasses used for this feeding trial were predominantly of Cyanotis Spp. Penicum Spp and Fimbrystylis Spp. They were grown during the monsoon and harvested when attained a height of approximately 20 cm, sun dried and chopped into 4-5 cm long pieces. Four black bengal goats with a mean live weight of 15 ( ±1.02) kg and 10- 12 months old were used for the experiment. All the goats were dewormed and housed in individual metabolic crates fitted with wire grid floors and faeces and urine separated by a slopping wire mesh grid. All the data were statistically analyzed and mean values were tested for difference with Duncan's New Multiple Range test.

Achievement/Findings:

The nutrient contents (g/kg OM) of native grasses were as follows : Dry matter 935 g, organic matter 905 g Nitrogen 172 g, NDF 775 g and Sulphur 1.5 g. Nitrogen content below 1 percent and sulphur content below 0.1 percent have shown to depress feed intake and microbial activity in the rumen From the nitrogen and sulphur content of these grasses by ruminant may not be restricted. Therefore it appear that feeding native grasses to goats may not cause any problem for their utilization due to deficiency of any of these nutrients. These were no significant variation among the goat's in intake of nutrients of native grasses that appears that intake and utilization. On the other hand ruminants usually retain high and low quality forages in the rumen between 6 and 50 hrs, respectively due to difference in the rate of digestion and passage. Therefore it is concluded that the grasses may be regarded as forage of medium quality and feeding in sufficient quantity may fulfill the nutritional needs for various productive purpose in goats.
