Distribution and Abundance of Freshwater Mollusks and Crustaceans in Chitra River (jaleshwari - Dhalgram), Jessore

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The investigation was carried out to observe species composition and abundance of fresh water mollusks and crustaceans in Chittra river, Jessore. Bimonthly sampling was done for a year from August, '04 to July, '05. A total of six species viz., Pila globosa, Bellamya bengalensis, Lamellidens marginalis, Corbicula assamensis, Macrobrachium rude, Patamon wood- mansoni were observed in the river. The abundance of mollusks (85.77%) was higher than that of crustacean (14.22%). The maximum dominance (45.97%) was shown by B. bengnlensis among six species consisting of 1.91 ± 0.95 ind.m^-2 and the least 4.27% by P. globosa with 0.13 ± 0.12 ind.m^-2. P. globosa was fully absent during August to September. An inverse relationship was found between the abundance of P. globosa and depth of water and the relationship between the abundance of L. marginalis and depth of water was significantly positive. Abundance of mollusks and crustaceans was low in Chitra river.

Objectives:

To observe the species composition and abundance of fresh water mollusks and crustaceans in Chittra river, Jessore.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in a part of the Chitra river (Jaleshwar- Dhalgram) situated at Bagharpara Thana of Jessore district. Five stations were selected for sampling. Bimonthly sampling was done for a year from August, 2004 to July, 2005. Samples were collected with a cast net, wooden frames were also used to gather the specimens from the surface of water. All specimens were counted and weighed with an electronic balance to the nearest of 0.1 g. The sampling duration could cover three main seasons viz., summer, winter and rainy seasons of Bangladesh. Specimens were brought to the laboratory, preserved in 10% formalin and later identified with standard keys. Sampling for water quality parameters viz., Temperature, pH, DO and salinity were also done.

Achievement/Findings:

The Chitra is a moribund river. It is highly degraded because of multiple co- extensive reasons and the present finding of the low abundance of mollusks and crustacean species in the river does suggest it. Snail harvest is done indiscriminately for shrimp farming from all the places of greater Jessore and Faridpur districts and their abundance is very rapidly declining. Efforts should be made for imposing seasonal ban on snail harvest and habitat restoration in one hand; on the other hand attempts should be made for bringing the species under aquaculture.
