Medicinal Plants of the Sundarbans and Their Uses.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Medicinal plants of the Sundarbans is a great natural assets of Bangladesh. The growing exceptional unknown interest in traditional medicine all over the country especially flowering plants, tree species, orchids, grasses, creepers have been generated great interest in the herbal sector. The Sundarbans medicinal plants not yet been identified or unavailable obtaining facilities its medicinal properties are being undiscovered. Actually only the localized people traditionally use these medicinal plants. Due to lack of available information and sufficient literature the herbal medicine and their indication our traditional assets are being unused.By dint of few herbal company like Hamdard, Shakti, Shadhana, And Shadeshi Ayurbedic Medicine are used to preparing Unanani and Ayurvedic Medicine and also prescribed by the practitioners of traditional medicine in different part of the country instead of allapathyc medicine.The medicinal plants and their usable information which will contribute to those who are involve in commerce and industry of medicinal plants of the Sundarbans. Therefore, for proper utilization and management of the Sundarbans medicinal plant it would be adopt special strategy to get sustainable productivity of the Sundarbans.The information about the medicinal uses and utility of different parts of a plant may fulfill one’s needs for local or permanent treatment.The curative properties that is different parts of species as well as root, bark, wood, leaves, buds, flower, seeds, burned ash, juice, tannin, secreted sap, latex, etc,. have been discovered gradually over many centuries by oral tradition and as well herbal preparation through rural kabiraj (physicians).Information about the medicinal plants of the Sundarbans with acceptable curative properties of the plants will be accumulated. Knowledge and generated technology would help to use the resources country wide as remedy for different types of ailments.

Methodology:

The assignment was to explore and conserve the medicinal plants of the Sundarbans which could be descried and also as used by Hakims and Kabiraj with special reference to local uses, parts used and exact mode of uses, etc. Such information will be helpful in many ways such as collection, cultivation and conservation of medicinal plants of the Sundarbans that would help to use in commerce and trade which will facilitating conservation and as local remedies for ailments.

Achievement/Findings:

The Sundarbans is very rich in its biodiversity and as an important resources of the country. Plants have been the versatile helpers of human being. They provide basic needs of man specially food, shelter, clothing, medicine, etc. Besides some mangrove timber and non-timber species also provide necessary drugs and medicines for curing ailments by the different forms of Pattern such as wet formation, dry formation, raw formation, decoction, burning formation, poultice formation, freezing formation etc,. Moreover knowledge which could be assessed this study will provide exploration gaps, medicine conservation of the Sundarbans.
