Fisheries Problems and Potential of Chitra and Fatki Rivers, Jessore

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Bangladesh has huge natural fisheries resources. The beels and the rivers are the important components of the inland fisheries. The fishermen of Bangladesh face the challenge of having to fish from these abundant but yet ecologically vulnerable water bodies. The Chitra and Fatki rivers are two of the moribund rivers in the greater Jessore area. Once known as rich fisheries habitats, the rivers could not sustain the resources because of the intricate natural and man made causes of habitat degradations; fishing now becomes only a seasonal activity of the traditional fishermen, though, fishing as they refer, is the main profession for their livelihood. The rivers, like any other inland open waters are beset with problems of serious resource depletion; drying, siltation, over exploitation, use of harmful fishing gears, obstruction of the rivers etc. are the inherent problems. The fishermen were less aware about the problems. The recent intervention of the Community Based Fisheries Management has restricted the use of harmful gears, mobilized the fishermen for increase of their awareness about fish migration and harms of catching fish in spawning season, however, some neo- fishermen posed threat to the initiative for which concerted efforts are needed to achieve success. In view of the above, a study was undertaken to know about the present status of the issues of fisheries resources management of the rivers and to gauge the future potential of the resources.

Methodology:

The study was carried out on the fisheries problems and potentials of the Chitra and Fatki rivers based on interwoven approaches of literature review, participatory observation, documentation, interviews, participatory research appraisal (PRA); and focus group discussions (FGD). A reconnaissance survey was made in the study area to familiarize with the locality and environment. The fishermen community and local people had been informally interviewed. For participatory observation survey, the key investigator and the research assistant visited the study area a number of times during the research period.

Achievement/Findings:

The fishery of the rivers Chitra and Fatki is degraded because of both man made and natural reasons. However, with respect to species abundance the rivers still has the potential for contribution to the livelihoods of the poor and marginal fishermen in the areas. The fishermen in the locality though were less informed about the use of harmful gears, habitat damage, fish spawning and migration, the intervention of CBFM in the rivers has turned out the fisher communities responsive in the activities for the sustainable and biological management of the resources. There are problems of power groups with neo-fishermen intrusion in the management committees and that needs careful handling for achieving success.
