Macronutrient Absorption Pattern of Rice and Their Distribution Under Two Levels of Fertility

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at BRRI experimental field to study the macronutrient absorption pattern of rice and their distribution to various plant parts at different growth stages under two levels of soil fertility. At all growth stages under both levels of fertility macronutrients absorption followed the order of K> N > M g>P>S>Ca, although the magnitude of absorption was almost two times higher with high level of soil fertility than with low level of soil fertility. Maximum nutrient absorption occurred at maximum tillering to panicle initiation stages. At early growth stages, most of the absorbed nutrients accumulated in culms, but at maturity their accumulation was the highest in panicle except K, which was the highest in the culms. Nitrogen , K, Sand Ca absorption ceased at flowering stage and P and Mg absorption continued till maturity.

Methodology:

The study was conducted during dry season at BRRI farm, Gazipur under two fertility levels- high and low fertility (fertilized with N, P₂0₅, K20 and S @ 120, 60, 40 and 20 kg/ha was denoted as high fertility plot and unfertilized plot as low fertility). The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 4 x 4 m. The plant spacing was 20 x 20 cm. Forty-five day-old three seedlings of of BR3 were transplanted in a hill. The total quantity of P, K and S were applied at final land preparatio and N was applied in three equal splits- at basal, 30 DAT and at 7 DBPI. The initial soil samples were collected for chemical analyses before setting up the experiment. The analytical methods of plant samples used were Micro Jeldahl method for N and nitric-perchloric acid digestion method for P, K and S. The soil of experimental plot was clay loam having total N, CEC, OM, available P, exchangeable K, available S and pH of 0.11%, 22.0 meq/100 g soil, 2.27%, 16.2 ppm, 0.39 meq/100 g, 18 ppm and 7.2, respectively. First plant sample was collected at 20 DAT and the subsequent samples were collected at 15 days interval up to ripening. Four selected adjacent hills were harvested along with roots. Border effect was avoided during sampling. The plant parts were separated into root, leaf, culm and panicle. All plant parts were washed thoroughly with distilled water and dried in oven at 80 °C for four days until a constant oven dry weight was achieved.

Achievement/Findings:

Nitrogen is usually the only element amongst commonly applied elements responsible for successful rice production .Its absorption was vigorous during vegetative growth and continued until flowering. Nitrogen supply at these stages should be sufficient for satisfactory biomass production and N build up in different plant parts for grain yield.The pattern of K content and uptake by rice plant is closely associated with vegetative growth and biomass production. The K content in plant parts was high in early tillering stages and decreased gradually till complete ripening. The percentage of P in leaves and culms was high in early stages of growth and gradually decreased. The pattern of K content and uptake by rice plant is closely associated with vegetative growth and biomass production.
