High Density Grain Panicles of Br3 in Dry Season Based on Thousand Grain Weight Under Different Plant Densities and Nitrogen Levels.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two experiments were conducted at BRRI Regional Station, Habiganj during dry season in 1996 under different plant densities and N levels to identify high-density grains panicle based on whole panicle grain weight. Filled grains weight increased with increasing specific gravity of the sodium chloride solution. Filled grains of BR3 heavier than specific gravity of 1.18 (1000-grain weight >26.9 g) considered as high density grain. The panicle produced within second week at 20 x 20 cm or only first week at close spacing considered as high density grain panicles. High-density grain panicles extended one week more in seedling number experiment than s pacing experiment viewing same plant densities. Application of N extended high-density grain panicles production one week than no N but the response pattern was similar as spacing or seedling number per hill. Placing more number of hills per unit area rather than placing more seedlings per hill was effective in increasing grain yield.

Objectives:

To observe whether 1000-grain weight can be used as an indicator for identifying high yield potential plants under a wide range of plant population per unit area with different N levels at large competitive crop environment.

Methodology:

Two experiments were conducted at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Regional Station, Habiganj during 1996 dry season. Soil of the experimental field was clay with pH 5.2, organic C 0.73% total N 0.07%, available P 12 ppm and Exchangeable K 0.2 meq/100g soil. One experiment was done with three spacing (20 x 20 cm, 20 x 10 cm and 10 x 10 cm) and three N rates (0, 60,120 kg/ha). The other study was conducted with three different seedling numbers (2.4 and 8 seedlings/hill) with the same N rates. Both the experiments maintained 50-200 seedlings/m² by varying both spacing and seedling numbers/hill. The experiments were laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 4 x 4 m. One third N as urea and all P and K (25 and 33 kg/ha as TSP and muriate of potash) were applied as basal doses and incorporated into soil before transplanting and rest of N was applied at 21 and 40 days after transplanting (DAT) in two equal splits. BR3 was used as the test crop. Forty-five day-old seedlings were transplanted. For spacing experiments two seedlings/hill were used and for seedling number/hill experiments hills were spaced 20 x 20 em apart. All intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Tillers produced were marked with iron rings number in a fixed hill (2 x 2 hill). At maturity the productive tillers of marked hills were counted. For yield data, 5 m² were harvested from each plot and grain yields were adjusted to 14% moisture content.

Achievement/Findings:

Filled spikelets decreased with increased specific gravity and the corresponding 1000-grain weight 10 29.2 gm. It was inferred that the panicles produced within 2-3 weeks depending upon spacing or seedling number per hill and N levels gave very close to high density grain weight and these panicle can be considered as high density grain panicle. However, reducing tillering is thought to facilitate synchronous flowering and maturity, more uniform panicle size and efficient use of horizontal space in contrast. If it could be possible to increase assimilates or carbohydrates in the tissue of 2-3 weeks tillers instead of late productive or unproductive tillers and remobilization of these stem carbohydrate reserves enough distributed among all the existing pikelets that are unfilled resulting in shrunken seed or directed to only a position of the remaining unfilled spikelets may create a room of further increased yield levels.
