Relationship of the Size of Sanctuaries and the Dry Season Water Area in Goakhola-hatiara Beel, Narail

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Sanctuaries are well known tools for open water fisheries management. The knowledge about the relationship between sanctuary size and total Beel area has been an important consideration. The study was undertaken to determine the size of the sanctuary that is optimum in consideration of the dry season water area in the Goakhaola-Hatiara Beel in Narail district for one year during 15 August 2004 to 15 August 2005. The CBFM2 project had established several sanctuaries of their own in the Beel; several other sanctuaries were also established in the Beel for the present study. From the respective water body 5%, 10% and 15% areas were used in constructing the sanctuaries using different treatments; there being a control area of water without sanctuaries in another nearby Beel, Sekhati. The local communities including the professional fishermen participated in the management and collection of data on the sanctuaries. The study revealed a linear positive relation of the size and area of the sanctuaries with the number of species and number and size of individual fish caught in the sanctuaries; the sanctuaries established in 15% area produced the best results with respect to the above indices followed by sanctuaries established in 10% and 5% areas of the Beel. It is suggested that about 20-25% area of the Beels can be devoted for the establishment of sanctuaries for long term sustainable management of Beel fisheries in the country.

Objectives:

To determine the size of the sanctuary that is optimum in consideration of the dry season water area in the Goakhaola-Hatiara Beel in Narail district.

Methodology:

The present study was undertaken in Maliat, Afra, Goakhola- Hatiara and Sekhati Beels under Narail, district, with the assistance of CBFM- 2, World Fish Center and Department of Fisheries (DoF). The different PRA tools - personal interviews and FGD were conducted. The primary data on catch assessment and fishing effort were collected through field surveys. The secondary data were collected from CBFM Project, World Fish Center, an NGO - Banchte Shekha (BS), DoF and from members of local Beef Management Committee (BMC). Efforts were made for selecting some indicator species. The selection of such species was thought to be important to see which species respond quickly to the suitable sanctuary size, materials used in the sanctuary and location of the sanctuary. The base line condition was with 5% sanctuary and two treatments were adopted with 10% and 15% areas of water of the Beel. A total of seven sanctuaries (5 from CBFM- 2 and 2 by the study) in Maliat Beel were established with the highest percentage in (15%) of the total dry season water area. Another six sanctuaries (4 from CBFM- 2 and 2 by the study) in Afra Beel covering a total dry season water area of 10% of the beef were established. There were three and two sanctuaries placed in Goakhola- Hatiara and Kathuria beef respectively by CBFM- 2 cover Sekh. Optimization of dry season water area for fish sanctuary 151 that sanctuary provided better habitat for fish and the materials used is sanctuary arracks the fish species and shelter.
