Salinity Level and Nutrient Status of BRRI Sonagazi Farm Soil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was performed to determine soil salinity level year round and to have a benchmark result on soil nutrient status of BRRI Sonagazi farm soil. Salinity level of surface soil (0-15 cm) increased gradually during November to March and remained peak from March to May. At the on set of monsoon, salinity level begins to decrease gradually to a minimum level (<4 dS/m) in June and remained static up to November. In dry season, salinity of surface soil was higher (5-15 dS/m) compared to sub-surface (2-5 dS/m). In wet season (June November), salinity level did not vary considerably with soil depth. The texture of Sonagazi farm soil is clay in nature and pH ranges from 6.6 to 7.7. The surface soil has low organic matter (1.64%), total N (0.13%) and available P (8 ppm). Exchangeable Na and Mg are high compare to exchangeable K and Ca. respectively. DTPA Fe and Mn content of the surface soils are much above the critical level.

Objectives:

To observe the value of soil characteristics and the nutrient status which may help in guiding proper fertilizer dose for the area to boost up crop production.

Methodology:

Six sites were selected from the BRRI Sonagazi farm that represents almost 90% at an increment of 15 cm or of the total farm area. From each site, 10 samples at different soil depth were collected and mixed thoroughly to make composite one. Soils used for determining nutrient status were collected on 7 May 1996. Rainfall occurred two weeks before soil collection. For determining ECe soil was collected every second day of the month during study period. Saturated extract was used for determining ECe. NH₄-Ac extract method was used for determining CEC (PCARR, 1979). Mechanical composition was determined by the hydrometer method. While total N, Available P and micronutrients were determined by microkjeldhal, Olsen and DTPA methods, respectively (Page et al., 1982).

Achievement/Findings:

The changes in the ECe of the saturation extract with time indicated high ECe existed during January to May and then decreased sharply and remain static below 4dS/m up to December. This result has a good similarity with the canal water salinity as monitored by the BRRI Sonagazi farm Scientist when they showed salinity increased from January up to May and stated decreasing in June and was very low in July. Salinity of subsoil ranged 2.1-5.4 dS/m and that of surface soil was 5.0-15.0 dS/m during January to April. In May, sub-soil salinity showed little bit increasing tendency due to onset of rainfall.The CEC of the soil ranges from 12.5 to 19.7 meq/100g depending upon sites and soil depth. Total N content in soil was 0.06-0.18% but surface soil contains on an average of 0.13% total N.
