Influence of Leaf Clipping on Grain and Herbage Yield of Deepwater Rice (oryza Sativa L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment on leaf clipping of deepwater (DW) rice was conducted during 1991 and 1992 in farmers' field at Subulla, Tangail, Bangladesh. The objectives were to determine forage yield, forage quality and grain yield of DW rice. Leaf clipping at 45 and 75 days after sowing and 60 days after flooding did not affect the grain yield of DW rice. Moreover, leaf clipping allowed additional rice herbage and crude protein yield over non-clipping treatment. Result also indicated a higher dry matter production and grain yield with higher harvest index. Leaf clipping at 60 days after flooding produced higher herbage, crude protein and grain yield of DW rice.

Objectives:

To explore the possibilities of rice forage collection and its effect on grain yield of DW rice.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during 1991 and 1992 on farmers' field at Subulla, Tangail, Bangladesh. The site is flood-prone and usually remains flooded from June to November. Flood water entered into the experimental field on 11 June and receded on 14 August in 1991. But in 1992, water entered on 20 June and receded on 8 November. Flooding depth varied from 1.5 to 2.5 m at the site. The experiment included four leaf clipping treatments- leaf clipped at 45, 75 days after sowing (DAS), at 60 days after flooding (DAF) and no leaf clipping. The experiment was conducted in 5- x 5-m unit plots laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Fertilizers N-P₂0₅-K₂0 @ 60-40-30 kg/ha were applied during final land preparation. Seeds of the local DW rice variety (Hijoldigha) were broadcast @ 100 kg/ha. The crop was sown on 4 May, 1991 and 2 May, 1992. Hand weeding was done before flooding. For leaf clipping treatments all the leaves were clipped by sickle above the collar of the plants. In the same way leaf clipping at 60 DAF was done by riding a country boat. Pruned leaves were dried in oven at 80°C for 72 hours. Fresh and dry weights of leaf were recorded. Total herbage yield was computed by combining rice forage and straw yield. Dry leaf samples were ground in a Wiley mill and analyzed for total N as well as crude protein. The mature rice was harvested from the whole plot on 10 November, 1991 and 15 November, 1992. The harvested rice was threshed, cleaned, dried and weighed and adjusted to 14 percent moisture content. Yield components viz., panicle/m², grains/ panicle and 1000-grain weight were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants. All collected data were analyzed statistically for treatment comparisons.

Achievement/Findings:

Present investigation indicates that DW rice can produce substantial amounts of high quality herbage for livestock. Leaf clipping for herbage collection did not adversely affect the growth and yield of DW rice, and as such it could be conveniently used for animal production in the DW rice areas of the country.
