Intercropping of Pigeonpea with Upland Rice at Different Row Ratios

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment on intercropping of pigeon pea with upland rice at different row ratios was conducted in the rice-based cropping pattern to asses the advantage of intercropping in terms of grain, biomass and economic return over rice monoculture. Both rice and pigeonpea yields reduced significantly by intercropping. However, the intercropping produced significantly higher rice equivalent yields as well as gross and net returns than sole cropping. The land equivalent ratio (LER) and the competitive ratio (CR) values indicated the advantages of intercropping over sole crops and the mutual compatibility of the crops. Moreover, the intercropping systems added organic N to soil. Rice- pigeonpea intercropping at 4:1 row ratio was compatible and economically profitable than 7:1 and 10:1 row ratios.

Objectives:

To observe the possibility of growing long duration, multipurpose pigeonpea with direct seeded Aus rice and to assess the agro-economic advantage of intercropping systems over monoculture.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) farm under rainfed condition in 1993. The rice variety BR2l and a local pigeonpea variety were used. Three row ratios of rice and pigeonpea intercropping viz., 4:1, 7:1 and 10: l along with their sole cropping were tested in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Unit plot size was 6 x 5 m. Both rice and pigeonpea were sown continuously in sole and intercropping in lines on 22 April 1993. Rice seeds were drilled in lines made 20 cm apart in both mono- and intercrops. Line to line distance for pigeonpea monocrop was 75 cm. As per treatments, one row of pigeonpea were grown after every four, seven and ten rows of rice in 4:1, 7: l and 10: I row ratios. The intercrop and sole rice were fertilized with 60-40-40 kg/ha N-P₂0₅-K₂0. All P₂0₅, K₂0 and one third of N were applied as basal and the remaining N was top dressed in two equal splits at 15 and 35 days after seeding (DAS) followed by hand weeding. Pigeonpea sole crop was fertilized @ 20-40-40 kg/ha N-P₂0₅-K₂0 and were applied at final land preparation. Intercropped pigeonpea was clipped twice. First clipping was done at 45 DAS at 30 cm plant height and the other one after rice harvesting at one meter plant height. Pigeonpea biomass at each clipping chopped and spread between rice rows. Rice and pigeonpea were harvested on 8 August and 22 December 1993, respectively at maturity. Rice equivalent yields (REY) were computed by converting the yield of pigeon pea into yield of rice on the basis of prevailing market price of the individual crops.

Achievement/Findings:

The results revealed that intercropping of upland rice with pigeon pea at 4:1 row ratio would be remunerative by providing higher net return and fuel for the farmers and adding N to the soil with little or no sacrifice of the rice grain yield. The crops were considered mutually compatible and could be grown in association.
