Effects of Split and Time of Urea-n Application on Growth, Yield and Biochemical Attributes of Transplant Aman Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out in pots at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during July to November 2002 to assess the effect of four nitrogen levels viz., T₁ (control: full dose of urea i.e. 170 kg/ha at final soil preparation), T₂ (full dose of urea in two splits, at 7 DAT + at 15 DAT), T₃ (full dose of urea in three equal splits, 1/3 at 7 DAT + 1/3 at 15 DAT + 1/3 at 30 DAT) and T₄ (full dose of urea in three equal splits, 1/3 at 15 DAT + 1/3 at 30 DAT + 1/3 at 50 DAT) on transplant aman rice varieties viz., BRRIdhan 33, BINAdhan 4 and Binashail. Plant height, leaf area plant^-1, chlorophyll and nitrate reductase activity in leaves, panicles plant^-1, panicle length, grains panicle^-1, 1000-grain weight, grain yield and total dry matter plant^-1 increased due to application of urea-N. Nitrogen fertilizer applied in 3 equal splits had the highest values of these parameters and T₃ and T₄ showed similar results.

Objectives:

The objective of the study was to assess the effect of four nitrogen levels on transplant aman rice varieties.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted in the pot yard of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during 11 July to 17 November 2002. The soil collected from the BINA farm. This belongs to the sonatola series under the Old Brahmaputra Floodplain (AEZ-9). Soil texture was silty loam having 6.8 pH and 0.09 total N. Earthen pots of 30 x 20 cm each containing 6 kg soil mixed with TSP, MP and Gypsum @ 135-70-60 kg/ha (1 ha = 3 x 10⁶ kg fresh soil). The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Three aman rice varieties viz., BRRI dhan33 (V₁), Binadhan-4 (V₂) and Binasail (V₃) were used. Four treatments were applied for nitrogen, viz., T₁ (control: full dose of urea i.e. 170 kg/ha at final soil preparation), T₂ (full dose of urea in two splits, at 7 DAT + at 15 DAT), T₃ (full dose of urea in three equal splits, 1/3 at 7 DAT + 1/3 at 15 DAT + 1/3 at 30 DAT) and T₄ (full dose of urea in three equal splits, 1/3 at 15 DAT + 1/3 at 30 DAT + 1/3 at 50 DAT). Three 30 day-old seedlings were transplanted in each pot on 11 July 2002. About 5-6 cm standing water was maintained in the pot up to maturity. No disease was noticed. Nogos@ 1.0 lit/ha was sprayed when grasshopper infestation occurred. The grains of the plants were protected from birds by mosquito net. Other intercultural operations were done as and when required.
