Genetic Variability, Character Association and Path Coefficient Analysis for Physiological Trait in a Diallel Cross of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out to investigate genetic variability, character association and path coefficient analysis for physiological trait in an eight-parent half diallel crosses of rice. BRRI dhan29, BR4828-54-4-I-4-9, BRRI dhan28, IR 8, Amol3, IR65610-38-2-4-2-6-3, Minikit and ZhongYu7 were chosen as parents. The highest genotypic, environmental and phenotypic variance was found in total leaf area (TLA) at 50% flowering followed by TLA at 45 days after transplanting (DAT) and grain yield / plant. TLA at 50% flowering, leaf area index (LA!), crop growth rate (CGR), net assimilation rate (NAR) and relative growth rate (RGR) had high genetic coefficient of variation (GCV) and phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV). High heritability associated with high genetic advance was also obtained in TLA at 50% flowering, LAI, CGR, NAR, RGR and grain yield /plant. Genotypic correlation coefficients were higher than the phenotypic correlation coefficients in most of the cases, which suggested that character association had not been largely influenced by environment. Grain yield/plant was positively and significantly associated at both genotypic and phenotypic level for TLA at 45 DAT and at 50% flowering, CGR and harvest index (HI). The highest positive direct effect on grain yield was obtained by leaf thickness followed by LAI and CGR . High positive indirect effects on grain yield were obtained by TLA at 50% flowering and at 45 DAT through LAI followed by RGR through CGR .

Objectives:

To find out the selection criteria of F₁s through the study of genetic parameters and relationship between grain yield and physiological characters.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Gazipur. BRRI dhan29, BR4828-54-4-I-4-9, BRRI dhan28, IR8 , Amo13, IR6561 0-38-2-4-2-6-3, Minikit and ZhongYu7 with different physiological characters were crossed in an 8 x 8 diallel design excluding reciprocals to generate 28 F₁s. Hybridization was done during Boro season, 2001-2002 and F₁s were evaluated in transplanted Aman season, 2002. The F₁ s were grown in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Twenty-five day-old single seedling/hill was transplanted at 25- x 20- cm spacing. The unit plot size was 2 m x 2 rows. Grain yield along with eight physiological characters were recorded as follows. Total leaf area at 45 DAT, total leaf area at 50% flowering, leaf area index ,crop growth rate , net assimilation rate , relative growth rate .leaf thickness and harvest index . Genetic variance (6² g), environmental variance (6² e), phenotypic variance ( 6² p), genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV), phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV), heritability in broad sense (H_b), genetic advance in percentage of mean (GAPM), genotypic correlation coefficients (r_g) and phenotypic correlation coefficients (r _p) and path coefficient analysis were performed . The estimate of GCV and PCV were classified as low, medium and high. The heritability was categorized along with genetic advance classification.

Achievement/Findings:

The genetic parameters, correlation and path coefficient analysis revealed that LAL, CGR and TLA at 45 DAT had high direct effect and highly significant positive correlation with grain yield, high GCV, high PCV, high heritability and high genetic advance in percentage of mean. Hence these three physiological characters were the most important traits for the selection of superior F₁s which could produce transgressive segregates in the pedigree nurseries.
