Farmer's Participatory Variety Selection of Deepwater Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Farmer's participatory variety selection (FPVS) is the selection of varieties by the farmers in the farmers field condition.Two FPVS trials of deepwater rice. one with five advanced lines under shallow water depth ( < 1.0 m) at six locations and other with seven local deep water rice (DWR) cultivar were tested under deep flooded conditions at five locations of Faridpur and Madaripur districts in 2001.The advanced line IR64588-47-3-2-2l3- 1 2-l-2-3 produced the highest grain yield (2.32 t/ha) followed by IR64588-47 -3-2-2B-9-1-2-3 (2.27t/ha) compared to a farmer variety laxmidigha (2.05t/ ha) in shallow water depth. The crop duration of these lines were almost same with farmer's check variety. The highest grain yield was obtained from Birpala (2.38 t/ ha) followed by Digha and HbjAVIII (2.04 t/ha) under deep flooded conditions. Farmer's variety (Gabura) produced the lowest grain yield (1.89t/ha). But crop duration was the lowest for farmer's variety Gabura (188 days) followed by Digha (193) and Birpala ( 196 days).

Objectives:

To select superior varieties in a farmer's participatory approach.

Methodology:

The first trial was conducted under shallow floodwater depth (<1.0 m) at Maligram, Shingria and Mazikanda villages of Faridpur and Vennabari, Gangabordi and Sutarkandi villages of Madaripur district during 200I. The second trial was at five locations (two at village Vennabari and one at Sutarkandi village of Madaripur district and two at Uttarkandi and Khapura viIIages of Faridpur district) during the same year. Five advanced lines viz. IR 64588-47-3-2-28- 12-I-2-3,IR64588- 47-3-2-28-9-I-3,IR60436-8-65-2,PCR89114-8- R-2-2-2-1,IR62653-8-3-3 and farmer check variety comprised the experimental materials for the first trial. For second trial seven selected local varieties (Birpala, CNL319, Digha, Fulkari, Gurbadal, Laldigh and HbjA VII) were evaluated. Except urea, other fertilizers were applied @ 60:40:40 kg/ ha of N, P ₂ 0₅, K ₂ 0 at final land preparation. Urea was applied in two equal splits, at 15 days after seedling emergence (DSE) and at 45-60 DSE.At each location, data on flood water depth at 15 days interval, phenotypic acceptance (Pacp) at vegetative and maturity stages, plant height (cm), nodal tillering, panicles/ m ², grain yield (t/ha) and crop duration (days) were recorded and subjected to statistical analysis.

Achievement/Findings:

The advanced line IR64588-4 7-3-2-28-12-1-2- 3 produced the highest grain yield (2.32 t/ ha) followed by IR64588-47-3-2-28-9-I-2-3 (2.27 t/ ha), Gabura (2.05 t/ ha) and PCR89114-8-R-2-2- 2-l.Crop duration was the highest with 1R64588-47-3-2-28-9-I-2-3 and IR60436-8-65-2 ( 196 days) followed by check variety ( 195 days). Crop duration was the lowest for PCR89114-8-R- 2-2-2-l ( 191 days). The cultivar Birpala produced the highest grain yield (2.38 t/ ha) followed by Diugha (2.04t/ha) and HbjA VIII (2.04 t/ha) under deep flooded condition . The farmer's variety produced the lowest grain yield (1.78 t/ ha). Crop growth duration was the lowest for farmer's local variety (188 days) followed by Laldigha (192 clays), Digha (193 days), Fulkari (193 days). Birpala and CNL319 took the highest crop duration (196 days). Farmers may use Birpala and Diogha for higher yield and faster elongation ability.
