Genetic Diversity in Irrigated Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Fifty irrigated rice genotypes originating from Bangladesh, IRRI (Philippines), Japan , China and Indonesia were subjected to cluster analysis. The genotypes were constellated into five distinct groups. The inter-cluster distance in most cases was larger than the intra-cluster distance suggesting wider genetic diversity among the genotypes of different groups. Maximum inter-cluster distance was observed between genotypes of cluster Ill and I followed by cluster Ill and IV. Closer affinity of Bangladeshi traditional varieties was observed though they belong to different clusters. Most of the breeding lines were included in single c luster indicating homogeneity in their pedigree. Plant height , panicle length, grains/panicle and grain yield/hill mainly contributed to the highest divergence between cluster Ill and I. The genotypes in cluster Ill and IV showed moderate to high inter-cluster distance with those in cluster I, II and V indicating the possibility to obtain heterotic progenies with high yielding ability, earliness along with desirable traits if the genotypes from former clusters are crossed with those from the latter ones.

Objectives:

To assess the extent of genetic diversity in 50 varieties/ lines selected from traditional , pedigree and exotic category for classifying those into clusters to select varieties/lines as prospective parents to develop transgressive segregants.

Methodology:

Fifty rice genotypes were selected from the germplasm collection of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Gazipur and were grown as dry season (Boro) irrigated rice in 2001. The trial utilized randomized complete block design with three replications. Forty days-old seedlings from each entry were transplanted using single seedling/hill in 2.4 m²plot at 25- x 15 cm spacing. Fertilizers were applied@ 80-27-60-12 kg/ ha N, P, K and S. All fertilizers except N were applied at final land preparation. Nitrogen was applied in three equal splits at 15 days after transplanting (DAT), at 35 DAT and at flowering stage. Intercultural operations and pest control measures were done as and when necessary. Ten plants from each entry were randomly selected for recording data on seedling height, plant height,days to flowering, days to maturity, panicle length, panicle/plant, 1000-grain weight, grains/panicle and yield/plant. The data were analyzed following principal component analysis. All statistical analyses were carried out using Genestat 513.
