Opinion of Block Supervisors on Environmental Hazards and Associated Problems Due to Continuous and Intensive Rice Cultivation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The purpose of this study was to investigate the opinion of Block Supervisors (BSs) on environmental hazards and associated problems due to continuous and intensive rice cultivation and to explore relationships of selected characteristics of BSs with their opinion . Data were collected through personal interviews from Kalihati and Ghatail upazilas of Tangail district. Majority (65%) of the BSs expressed highly favourable and 35% moderately favourable opinion on environmental hazards and associated problems due to continuous and intensive rice cultivation. Significant positive correlation was found between the BSs opinion and their education, training received ,organizational participation, newspaper exposure, radio exposure, knowledge about rice farming, knowledge on agrochemicals and attitude towards use of agrochemicals.

Objectives:

relationships of selected characteristics of BSs with their opinion

Methodology:

Kalihati and Ghatail upazilas under Tangail district were selected as the locale of this study. The BSs of these two upazilas were the population as well as the samples of this study. There were 36 BSs in Kalihati and that of 33 in Ghatail during data collection. An interview schedule was carefully designed for data collection. Simple and direct questions and different scales were used to obtain information. Data for this study were collected through personal interviewing from the BSs during 5 August to 5 September 2001. BSs were asked to give their opinion regarding 22 selected statements related to environmental hazards and associated problems due to continuous and intensive rice cultivation.The statements in the interview schedule were selected based on relevant literature searching and consultation with experts in the same area. Among the statements, 15 statements were positive and 7 were negative, which were arranged randomly in the scale in order to avoid the respondents' bias. Summated rating (Kothari, 1995) was used to compute the opinion score. The scale consisted of selected statements which expressed either a favourable or unfavourable opinion towards the given objective to which the respondent is asked to react. BSs were allowed to respond as strongly agree, agree, undecided, disagree, and strongly disagree with corresponding rating score of 4,3,2, 1 and 0. The scoring order was reversed for the negative statements. Theoretically, thus, a respondent might get the score of O to 88.

Achievement/Findings:

The vast majority (59%) of BSs had higher level of general education. It was also found that there was positively significant relationship between education of BSs and their opinion. Upgrading education level of BSs would contribute to the development of their favourable option towards hazardous impact of modern technologies on environment. Frequent media exposure could bring satisfactory outcome to the BS to persuading environmentally friendly agricultural technologies. Thus, the message content of the programmes of different mass media including newspaper, radio and television should include massive technological information about the environmental issues and sustainable agriculture. It is suggested that BSs should be offered more training in order to understand and cope with the complicated matter of sustainable agriculture.
