Performances of Modern Rice Varieties in T. Aman Season Under Farmer's Management Conditions in Northern Region of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Seven teen modern rice varieties were tested in Rangpur and Dinajpur during T. A man seasons of 2000 and 200I for determination of varietal performances along with farmers reaction for its cultivation. BRRI dhan36 produced the highest grain yield (5.23 t/ha) followed by BRRIdhan31 and BR II , but it was very short stature with poor straw yield and quality. BRRI dhan33 matured in 121 days, others matured in 126-166 days depending on varieties. Farmers preferred BR II for its higher grain yield, BRRI dhan32 for its early maturity and acceptable yield potential and that of BRRI dhan34 for its scented grains. A massive extension of BRII, BRRI dhan31, BRRI dhan32 and BRRI dhan34 is suggested for commercial cultivation in Rangpur-Dinajpur regions for keeping pace with population growth of the country.

Objectives:

To determine varietal performances of rice along with farmers reaction for its cultivation.

Methodology:

Two experiments were carried out at the farmers' fields of Mithapukur, Rangpur and Sayadpur,Dinajpur during T. Aman seasons of 2000 and 2001 respectively. The varieties tested were BAU2, BINA dhan4, BRIO, BRII, BR22, BR23, BR25, BRRI dhan30, BRRI dhan31, BRRI dhan32, BRRI dhan33, BRRI dhan34, BRRI dhan36, BRRI dhan37, BRRI dhan38, BRRI dhan39 and Binasail. Randomized complete block design was utilized with three replications. Unit plot size was 5- x 3m. Seeds were sown in seedbed on 15 and 24 June and transplanted on 24 and I August for 2000 and 200I respectively. Fertilizers used were 68-25-20-7 kg/ ha (Mithapukur) of N, P₂ 0₅, K₂0 and S in the form of urea, triple super phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MP) and gypsum, respectively. At Sayadpur the rate was 80-18-20-0 kg/ha. Fertilizer doses were lower compared to recommended dose because farmers applied high doses of fertilizers in previous potato crop (325-180-225-60-5-6000 kg/ha of urea, TSP, MP, gypsum, zinc sulfate and cow dung, respectively at Mithapukur and that of 280-200-200-70-5-5000 kg/ha at Sayadpur).Seedlings number per hill (4-6), spacing (25- x 20 cm) and other cultural practices were same in both the locations. Data were randomly selected I0 hills in each plot at maturity. Data were analyzed following standard statistical procedure and the means were compared following DMRT (using computer MSTAT program).
