Effect of Phosphorus on Submergence Tolerance of Rice (oryza Sativa L.) Seedling

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute ( BRRI), Gazipur during 2004 to study the survivability and recovery ability of submerged rice seedling in response to phosphorus (P) content. The experiment consisted of five P concentration, 0.5, 3, 5, I 0 and 15 ppm with two varieties, FR 13A and BR II . With the increasing P concentration survival percentage and recovery increased up to I0 ppm P. Survival percentage and tolerance level to submergence irregularly increased in FR 13A but the increase was steady in BR II up to I0 ppm P. Irrespective of variety, I0 ppm P gave the highest survivability and recovery from submergence. The survival percentage decreased at 15 ppm P in both the varieties. The degree of positive relationship between percent survival and percent P content of seedling was slightly higher (r = 0.899) in BR II compared to tolerant variety FR 13A (r = 0.869). After 30 days recovery from submergence the growth characteristics like plant height, tiller number and dry matter were the highest at I 0 ppm P with both the varieties. It is concluded that culture media containing I0 ppm P induces maximum tolerance and recovery of submerged rice seedling.

Objectives:

To assess the effects of P content of rice seedling on survival and recovery of submerged plants.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the greenhouse of Plant Physiology Division, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute during T. Aman season, 2004. Two varieties namely FRI3A and BRll were used in this study. Thirty-day-old seedlings same leaf stage) were transplanted in lines in steel trays (50- x 40- x 15 cm) containing P deficient soil (5.7 ppm P). Before transplanting the soil was thoroughly puddled and fertilized with urea-muriate of potash-gypsum @ 5-2-2 g/tray. Each tray contained four rows of plants accommodating two rows of each entries. Each row contained 10 plants. At 12 DAT the plants were completely submerged for I0 days in a cemented water tank to a depth of 100 cm above the soil level. The water was made turbid twice daily by mixing mud so that there was 1.53 g/L soil particle of water. This was done to simulate the conditions of flooding in nature. After drainage of water, the plants were allowed to recover for 30 days. At 15 days after drainage of water, 3g of urea was applied in each tray. The treatments were assigned in completely randomized design with four replications. Percent survival was measured after 15 days of drainage. The elongation ability was recorded at the end of submergence. Submergence tolerance score was recorded after 5 days of drainage. Submergence tolerance score was made. Recovery score was recorded in terms of growth vigor and tiller number per hill at 30 days after termination of submergence treatment. Total phosphorus was determined by digesting with di-acid mixture of nitric acid and perchloric acid at the ratio 5:2. Data were analyzed statistically following analysis of variance technique and mean differences were adjudged for LSD test.

Achievement/Findings:

Phosphorus concentration at I0 ppm used in culture media was the best for the survivability and recovery ability of submerged rice plants. So, by using optimum level of P fertilizer in T. Aman season, seedling mortality due to flash flood might be reduced under field conditions.
