Yield of Transplant Aman Rice as Affected by Methods of Raising Seedlings

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural Institute Farm, Sher-e Bangia Nagar, Dhaka during June to November, 1983 to determine the yield of transplant aman rice as affected by methods of raising seedlings. Three cultivars (BR 4, BR 10, BR 11) and three methods of raising seedlings (Dapog, dry and wet seedbed) were used in the study. Methods of raising seedlings and rice cultivars differed significantly for grain yield. The highest yield (7.40 t /ha) was obtained when seedlings were raised by dapog or wet method. The dry method of raising seedlings gave the lowest grain yield (6.5 t/ha). Amongst the rice cultivar BR 11 produced the highest grain yield (8.5 t/ha), but BR 4 and BR 10 did not differ significantly for grain yield.

Objectives:

The present study was designed to for raising seedlings of three high yielding aman rice cultivars through three different methods.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Agricultural Institute Farm, Dhaka from June to November 1983. The soil was clay loam with a pH 5.5. Three aman rice cultivars namely BR 4, BR 10 and BR 11 were tested, through the seedlings raised by dapog, dry and wet methods. The methods of raising seedlings are as follows: Dapog seedbed, Dry seedbed and Wet seedbed. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with four replications by assigning cultivars in the main plots and methods of raising seedling in the unit-plots of 20 m². The crop was harvested when 80% of the panicles had matured. The yield was converted from net area of the plot (12 m² ) into tons per hectare (t/ha) . The yield of clean un-husked rice has been expressed at 14% moisture. The other observations on crop were recorded from 10 randomly selected hills and data were statistically analyzed.

Grain yield also differed significantly among the cultivars. It was highest (8.50 t/ha) in BR 11 followed by BR 4 and BR 10). The highest grain yield obtained from BR 11 was mainly due to increased number of effective tillers . BR 10 had similar grain size as that of BR 11 but produced less tillers and lower number of panicles and grains/panicle. BR 4, on the other hand, had more number of grains/panicle but reduced number of tillers and panicles/hill. The grain yield resulted from all the cultivars under study were higher than the average and this was probably due to the fact that the plot used for the experiment remained fallow during the preceding season of the experimental crop.There was no significant interaction between the varieties and the methods of raising seedlings although BR 11 produced the highest (albeit insignificantly different) grain yield (7.40 t/ha) when raised by dapog or wet method.
