Pod Maturity Synchrony in Relation to Canopy Structure in Mungbean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Asynchrony in pod maturity is a major problem in mungbean cultivation. Experiments were conducted to assess relationship in synchrony/asynchrony in pod maturity with canopy structure in twelve mungbean varieties under sub-tropical condition. Results revealed that those varieties which produced maximal opened flowers within 10 days, and ceased flowering within 15 days after first flowering, had synchrony in pod maturity. This is possible when plant is short stature and uniculm type or has one branch. This aspect may be used in future plant breeding programme for getting variety of mungbean having synchronous pod maturity with high yield potential.

Objectives:

To study describes the relationship of synchrony/asynchrony in pod maturity with canopy structure in twelve modern mungbean varieties. Such information may help for future plant breeding programme.

Methodology:

The first two experiments were conducted at the experimental farm of the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, Bangladesh with twelve modern mungbean varieties during Kharif-I (March-May) season of 2009 and 2010. The varieties were arranged in a randomized complete block design in three replicates. The unit plot size was 2 m × 2 m with plant spacing of 30 cm between rows and 10 cm within row. Recommended cultural practices were followed in both seasons. The third experiment was conducted in 2011 to assess the possible reasons of asynchrony/synchrony in pod maturity by studying flowering pattern on main stem and branches of both high and low yielding varieties. The fourth experiment was conducted with one high yielding variety having high branching capacity to make synchronous pod maturity behaviour by imposing different levels of debranching. Five different levels of debranching (MS + 4 br. (cont.), MS + 3 br., MS + 2 br., MS + 1 br., MS only) were imposed from starting branching initiation and maintained it up to final harvest. Five plants from each replication of experiments 1, 2 and 4 were randomly tagged for daily count of opened flowers. Flower count began from the date of opening of the first flower and continued daily until flowering ceased. In the third experiment, flowers were daily counted separately on main stem and branches until flowering ceased. Flower productions at 3-day durations were calculated from the data. The morphological, yield and yield attributes were recorded at harvest. The degree of synchrony/asynchrony in pod maturity was determined by the method of Mondal et al. (2011). All data were analyzed statistically.

To achieve synchronous pod maturity with high yield in mungbean, plant should be short stature and uniculm or have one branch and capacity to produce maximal flowers within 10 days after commencement of flowering.
