Conception Rate in Zebu Cows with Frozen Sahiwal Semen

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study on the fertility rates ot 1203 inseminations with imported deep frozen Sahiwal semen were carried out at the Artificial Insemination (AI) centres of Tangail milk shed area (MiIk Vita). It has been revealed that the conception rates of native cattle with deep frozen Sahiwal semen were found to be 62.51%. A high conception rate (63.53%) was observed in first service, but the conception rates in second and third services were found to be 51.11 and 50.00% respectively. Insemination of indigenous cows at the mid-cycle had singnificanly (P< 0.01) higher conception rate (69.69%) as compared to early and late cycles. No significant difference in performance of two inseminators was observed.

Objectives:

To determine the conception rate in native zebu cows with frozen Sahiwal semen.

Methodology:

A total of 1203 inseminations with deep frozen Sahiwal semen (Breedex Datuk AIi-67396, Breedex Sues Pride-67396, Breedex Commence Pukeitihan-60882, B. C Rockbee-68051, Fernhill-68592) imported from the New Zeland were done by two trained Livestock Field Assistant and lnseminator from February, 1987 to February, 1990 at the Artificial Insemination (AI) centres of Tangail milk shed areas of Milk-Vita co-operative. The cellophane straw containing frozen semen was stored in the Liquid nitrogen cannister at -196°C. The AI was performed. Briefly, after controlling the oestrous cows in the trevice, perineum was washed with clean water, then with mild soapy water to remove the dung from the vagina. The frozen semen straw was removed from the liquid nitrogen cannister as quickly as possible with forceps and placed in flask of mild warm water (35°C-38°C) for thawing. After 10 seconds, the straw was removed from the thawing bath and wiped with tissue paper. The top end of the straw was cut off with a pair of scissors and fitted immediately in the designed insemination gun. The left hand of the inseminator was lubricated with vaseline and introduced per rectum to grasp the cervix. The insemtnation gun was inserted with the right hand per vaginum through the cervix to the uterus and the semen was place beyond the third ring into the body of the uterus by pushing the gun piston. All inseminated non-retured cows were rectally examined for pragnancy between 60-90 days post-insemination and the data were recorded and analysed for variations in conception rate using Chi-squrre test.

Achievement/Findings:

The higher conception rates were probably due to proper use of AI technique with sexual hearth control proqrarnme. Highest conception rate in the mid-oestrus, as found in the present study, would suggest that successful conception may be achieved if insemination is done within 12-18 hours after the onest of oestrus signs. Finally it may be suggested that correct timing of insemination, proper thawing process of frozen semen with veterinary control of herd fertility would enable to achieve desirable conception. Further study is needed with large number of cattle population with proper AI recording system under veterinary herd fertility programme. There was no significant (P>0.05) effect of the performance of inseminators on conception rate (64.52% vs 62.11%).
