Nepliotettix virescens green leaf-hopper, the vector of rice tungro virus disease was found to be abundant during April to July and November, 1980. But their population became very low during December to March. Tungro disease incidence correlates positively with abundance of the vector insect, N. virescens.

To determine the periods of abundance of N. virescens and its relation to tungro incidence and thus to develop a forecasting system helpful in reducing tungro outbreak through proper control efforts.

Tungro incidence and N. virescens population were noted once every week within BRRI farm, Joydebpur and in the farmers' fields 10 miles around the BRRI campus in 1980. The insects were collected by sweeping net and their transmissibility was tested from every collection in the greenhouse by allowing 24 hrs acquisition and 24 hrs inoculation on TN1 variety. N. virescens per 100 sweeps, transmitter N. virescens per 100 sweeps and tungro incidence are shown in this experiment.

Results indicate that tungro incidence follows the pattern of insect abundance, indicating a positive correlation between the abundance of N. virescens and tungro incidence.
