Genetic Parameters and Correlation Studies in Lentil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Genetic parameters and correlations were studied in a field experiment using ten lentil genotypes under five cultural environments created by manipulating rhizobial inoculum, nitrogen and phosphate fertilizers and row spacing. Among genetic parameters such as GCV, PCV, h² b, GA estimated for Important economic characters. high GCV was recorded in flowering, pods/plant, plant biomass/plot and yield/plot. High heritability b) coupled with high genetic advance (GA) was estimated in days to flowering and maturity. plant height, pods/plant and yield/plot. The estimates of all the genetic parameters were, however, poor in protein content. Yield/plant was positively and significantly correlated with nodule number and nodule wt., seedling biomass, plant height. pods/plant, individual plant biomass and protein content. Whilst yield/plot was positively and significantly correlated with plant height, pods/plant, plant biomass, protein content and yield/plant. Yield/plot was negatively correlated with 1000 grain wt. Correlation coefficients between cultural environments for grain yield and also for protein content have indicated similar and dissimilar performances of the trait in the concerned environments.

Objectives:

To study some genetic parameters for grain yield and important economic characters of lentil and also to examine their correlations if any, under a set of cultural environments.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during rabi season of 1991- 92 at the experimental farm of Genetics and Plant Breeding Department. BAU, Mymensingh. Ten lentil genotypes of diverge origin were used. Five cultural environments were considered, these were as follows - E₁ : Use of inoculum and 15 cm row space; E₂ : Use of N @ 30 kg /ha and 15 cm row space; E₃ : Use of p₂o₅ @ 50 kg/ha and 15 cm row space; E₄ : Use of inoculum, N @ 30 kg /ha, P₂0₅ 50 kg /ha and 30 cm row space E₅ : without inoculum, N and P and 15 cm row space. A RCB design with factorial arrangement of treatment (genotypes, environments) using three replications was used. Fertilizers for E₂ , E₃ and E₄ were thoroughly mixed with soil by light ploughing at the time of final land preparation. Intercultural operations included weeding and earthing up, which were done twice. first after 30 days and second after 45 days of sowing . The observations were taken on individual plant basis from 10 randomly selected plants per genotype. Data were recorded on nodules/plant at 42 and 65 days after sowing ( DAS): nodule wt. at 42 and 65 DAS, fresh seedling biomass at 42 and 65 DAS, days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, plant height, pods/plant, individual plant biomass, plant biomass/plot, yield/plant, yield plot. 1000- grain wt. and seed protein content. The protein content was estimated. The genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation, heritability, genetic advance and correlation coefficients were calculated.
