Growth and Yield of Proso-millet Cultivars as Influenced by Sowing Date

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to study the growth and yield of four proso- mollet /Panicum miliaceum L.) cultivars. Tusher, Kumardhon, B_pm 24 and B_pm 40, under five dates of sowing- 15 November, 30 November, 15 December. 30 December and 15 January during 1992- 93. Days to germination were delayed with delay 10 sowing while days to panicle initiation, 50% flowering and maturity were enhanced with the same.The crop sown on 15 and 30 November produced higher number of green leaves/plant,leaf area index, leaf area duratton, dry matter and grain yield. The cultivar Kumardhon was superior to others in respect of different growth parameters. Kumardhon also recorded the highest grain yield (2.06 t/ha) which was identically followed by B_pm-40 (2.04 t /ha) and Tusher ( 2 .03 t ha).

Objectives:

To investigate the effect of sowing date on growth parameters with special reference to leaf area index and dry matter accumulation including yield of different proso-millet cultivars.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from November to April, 1992- 93. The soil was silty loam belonging to the agro-ecological zone of the old Brahmaputra Floodplatn. Two contrasting groups of cultivars were chosen. Tusher, a high yielding variety; Bpm-24 and Bpm- 40, two promising cultivars possess 'loose and one sided' type of panicle. The other promising cultivar Kumardhon possesses 'spreading' type of panicle. The experiment was laid out in a split -plot design with 3 replications keeping the sowing dates namely, 15 November, 30 November, 15 December, 30 December and 15 January in main plots and cultivars in sub-plots. Individual plot size was 4m x 2.5m. The experiment was done under irrigated condition following the standard agronomic practices. For recording total dry matter accumulation per plant (above ground plant parts). 10 plants were collected at random from each plot excluding the border and harvest area at panicle initiation (PI), 50% flowering, 15 days after flowering (DAF) and maturity stage. Total leaf area of 10 plants harvested at Pl, 50% flowering and 15 DAF were measured using an automatic leaf area meter (Model Ll- 3000, USA). Number of green leaves per plant were counted from the same plants. The plants were then dried in an oven at 70⁰C for 48 hours and dry weights were recorded. Finally. leaf area index (LAI) and leaf area duration (LAD) were calculated.

From the results, it may be concluded that among the four cultivars of proso-millet, Kumardhon, B_pm-40 and Tusher are very promising and the optimum time of sowing is 15 to 30 November for obtaining the best yield under the agro-ecological zone of Old Brahmaputra Floodplain of Bangladesh.
