An experiment was conducted during the period from February to June 2011 to investigate the effect of Chitosan growth regulator on morphological characters, growth, biochemical, reproductive, yield attributes and yield in summer tomato cultivar cv. BINA tomato-6. The experiment comprised five levels of Chitosan concentrations viz., 0 (control), 25, 50, 75 and 100 ppm. The Chitosan was applied two times at vegetative (25 days after transplanting, DAT) and flowering start phase (40 DAT). Application of Chitosan increased most of the plant parameters. The highest plant height, branch and leaf number, TDM,  AGR, RGR, biochemical parameters such as NR and total sugar, reproductive characters such as number of effective flower clusters plant-1, flowers plant-1 and reproductive efficiency and fruits plant-1 were recorded in 75 ppm of Chitosan solution sprayed on tomato plants at 25 and 40 days after transplanting. Control, where only water was sprayed, showed the lowest of the above parameters. The highest fruit yield was recorded in 75 ppm due to increased number of fruits  plant-1. Chitosan at 75 ppm may be used for getting maximum fruit yield in tomato.

To study the effect of Chitosan on growth, yield and yield attributes  of  summer tomato cv Binatomato-6; and to determine the optimum concentration of Chitosan in order to maximize the yield of summer tomato cv BINA tomato-6.

The experiments were carried out at the farm of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, Bangladesh during February-June of 2011. The experiment comprised five levels of Chitosan concentrations viz., 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 ppm. The Chitosan was applied two times at vegetative (25 days after transplanting, DAT) and flowering start phase (40 DAT). The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The chitosan was sprayed by a hand sprayer at afternoon. The tomato variety, BINAtomato-6 was used as test crop. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. urea, TSP, MP,  gypsum and cowdung were applied at the of 300, 160, 140, 40  and 10000 kg ha-1, respectively. Recommended cultural practices were followed for normal plant growth and development. To study growth characteristics, a total of two harvests were made in 2011. The first and second crop sampling was done at 40  and 60 DAT. From each sampling, five plants were randomly selected from each plot and uprooted for collecting necessary parameters. The plants were separated into roots, stems, leaves and fruits, and the corresponding dry weight were recorded after oven drying at 80 ± 20C for 72 hours. The leaf area was measured by automatic leaf area meter (Model: LICOR 3000, USA) at 80 DAT, just before starting of harvesting fruits. The growth analysis like absolute growth rate (AGR) and relative growth rate was carried out following the formula of Hunt (1978). All biochemical parameters were recorded at 50-60 DAT, the fruiting stage. Other morphological, reproductive and yield attributes were recorded during tomato harvest. Harvesting was done at different dates depending on fruit ripening. The collected data were analyzed statistically.

Foliar application of Chitosan at vegetative stage (25 DAT) and reproductive start stage (40 DAT) had significant influence on plant characters, yield attributes and fruit yield of tomato over control; and Application of Chitosan @ 75 ppm had superiority for plant growth, biochemical, reproductive characters, yield components and yield over 25, 50 and 100 ppm. So, we may use 75 ppm of Chitosan for getting maximum fruit yield in summer tomato.
