Determination of Optimum Maturity Time of Four Groundnut Varieties Developed at BINA

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted to determine optimum maturity time of four groundnut varieties viz., Binachinabadam-1, Binachinabadam-2, Binachinabadam-3 and Dhaka-1. Binachinabadam-1 showed its earliest flowering peak of 103 DAS, while Binachinabadam-3 showed flowering peak at 113 DAS. Other two varieties, Dhaka-1 and Binachinabadam-2 showed its flowering peak at 108 DAS. The peak of mature pod production by Dhaka-1 was recorded at 150 DAS, while it was 165 DAS for Binachinabadam-1, Binachinabadam-2 and Binachinabadam-3 which indicated that the proper time for harvest was 150 DAS for Dhaka-1 and 165 DAS for Binachinabadam-1, Binachinabadam-2 and Binachinabadam-3. It happened due to greater flower production within 100 DAS in Dhaka-1 which matured at 150 DAS. The higher number of immature pods was observed in Binachinabadam-3 at most of the reproductive growth stages. In contrast, Binachinabadam-2 produced lower number of immature pods at most of the reproductive growth stages which consequence higher mature pods as well as pod yield.

Objectives:

This study focused to determine optimum harvesting time of four groundnut varieties Binachinabadam-1, Binachinabadam-2, Binachinabadam-3 and Dhaka-1.

Methodology:

A field experiment was carried out at BINA farm, Mymensingh during November 2006 to April 2007 to assess the flowering pattern of BINA released varieties. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The unit plot size was 2 m × 2 m and the spacing was 30 cm × 15 cm. Flower counts were recorded from 10 plants of each replication just from the date of first flowering and there after every day up to 60 days after flowering. Plant samples were harvested 5 times with 15 days interval from 105 to 165 DAS and at each harvest, number of mature and immature pods and pod yield were recorded from five competitive plants. Mature pods were separated from immature pods which were identified by their shriveled seeds and pod coat colour. The collected data were analyzed statistically.
