Variability and Correlation Studies in Tomato Mutants

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field experiments were carried out to investigate the variations in morpho-physiology and reproductive characters, and yield attributes for selection of important source and sinks characters using correlation analysis in 10 tomato genotypes. Large genetic variability existed in source characters viz., leaf area index and sink characters viz., number of flower cluster plant^-1, flowers plant^-1 and fruits pods plant^-1. Results revealed that LAI was the most important source that determined total dry mass (TDM) yield, and reproductive characters like number of flower cluster, flowers and fruits plant^-1 were the most important sinks that determined fruit yield. Contrarily, reproductive efficiency did not show strong relations with fruit number and fruit yield indicating that selection of high yield based on reproductive efficiency may be misleading. Fruit yield had highly significant positive correlation with leaf area, LAI, total dry mass, absolute growth rate, number of flower clusters and fruits plant^-1. On the other hand, fruit size had significant negative association with fruit number. This result indicates that the improvement of fruit number plant^-1 could be achieved by selecting increased number of effective flower cluster plant^-1. The mutant, TM-133 maintained superiority in most of the yield related traits and produced the highest fruit yield.

Objectives:

To investigate variations in some growth, biochemical parameters, reproductive characters, and yield attributes for selection of important sources and sinks based on correlation in 12 elite tomato mutants.

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh, during the period from November 2007 to April 2008 to investigate correlation among some morphological, growth, reproductive characters, yield attributes and fruit yield in ten tomato mutants/varieties. They were Binatomato-4, Binatomato-5, TM-113, TM-127, TM-128, TM-131, TM-132, TM-133, TM-134 and TM-160. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Urea, triple super phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MP), gypsum and cowdung were applied at the rate of 280, 250, 180, 80 and 10000 kg ha^-1, respectively (BARC, 2005). Total amount of TSP, MP, gypsum and cowdung were applied as basal doses during final land preparation. Half of urea was applied as top dress at 21 days after transplanting and rest half was applied at 45 days after transplanting. Unit plot size was 3.5 m x 4.0 m. Plant spacing was 50 cm for plant to plant and line to line distance. Recommendated cultural practices were followed for plant growth and development. Photosynthesis, chlorophyll, nitrate reductase, total sugar were determined at 55-60 DAT. At harvest, morphophysiological, phenological, reproductive, yield and yield contributing characters were recorded from 10 competitive plants of each plot. Phenotypic and genotypic correlations were estimated according to Johnson et al. (1955).

Achievement/Findings:

Leaf area index is the most important source that determined total dry mass (TDM) yield, and flower clusters, flowers and fruits production. Further, number of fruits and fruit size constituted central important sinks which exerted direct positive influence on fruit yield. The results mean that fruit yield could be increased by increasing flower clusters and flower production. It follows that selection for high yield should be considered accordingly and high yielding genotypes, in general, possessed higher above mentioned source (LAI) and sink (flower and fruits number) characters which resulted in higher seed yield in tomato.
