The field experiments with sixteen newly isolated mutants of sesame, conducted during 1993 and 1994 cropping seasons, revealed significant differences among mutants and two mother  as checks for most  of the characters examined. Five mutants gave higher  seed yield  than the  characters examined. Five mutants gave higher  seed yield than the check  S-30 and seven mutants out yielded the check T-6 in 1993 trial.  Mutant M-110 gave  the highest seed yield ( 1827 kg/ha followed by  M-113 (1792  kg/ha. M-107 (1677 kg) and M-109 (1650 kg). Check  variety  T-6 and S-30  produced 1503 kg seed/ha.  Five  mutants. S-104. S-109.  S-110.  S-113 and  S-114  were   tolerant  to   water logging conditions and resistant to stem rot disease (Macrophomina phaseolinal in field condition. The highest< 011 content  (53%1  was obtained from  three  mutants, M-109, M-110 and M-111. Check  var . T-6  and S-30 had 40% and  46% oil in the  seeds. In 1994 experiment, mutant M-113 produced the  highest seed yield (av. 1405 kg/hal followed by the  mutant M-110 (1401 kg/hal while  the  two check, S-30 and T-6 gave 1193 kg and 1 203  kg seed/ha. respectively.

To  assess and confirm the  seed  yield  and  oil content .

Two  experiments were  conducted with  the   promising mutants  of   sesame.  The experiment 1, a unilocation one, was  conducted at BINA  sub station farm, lshurdi with 16 elite   mutants from M4 generation. The  seeds   of  this   experiment  were   sown on   25 September 1993. The Experiment 2 consisted of six mutants was  sown on 16, 18  and  23 March 1994 at  three agro-ecological zones  of  Bangladesh viz., RARS  farm, Rahmatpur, Barisal; BRRI Regional Station, Camilla and BINA  sub station, lshurdi, respectively. These six mutants were selected from M4 generation. Mother variety T-6 and S-30  were included in both these experiments as check. The experiments were laid out in randomized complete block design with 3  replications. Unit plot sizes  were 3m  x  3m  and  4m  x  5m  for  the Experiment 1 and  2, respectively. Recommended cultural practices were  used  for  normal growth and development of  plants.Data  on plant height, number of capsules/plant, number of  seeds/capsule, 1000-seed weight, seed yield, days  to maturity and oil content were  taken to analyse the mean values for  statistical interpretation .Reaction to stem rot disease and resistance/tolerance to water logging conditions were carefully noted.

The results revealed that out  of 16 mutants five  mutants gave  higher seed yield  than  S-30 and seven mutants out yielded the  var. T-6. The mutant M-110 gave  the highest seed yield ( 1827 kg per hectare) followed by M-113 ( 1792 kg per hectare), M-107 ( 1677 kg)  and M-109 (1650 kg). The  check variety T-6  and S-30 produced 1503 kg and  1605 kg seed/ha. It  was also   found  that    increase  of   seed   yield    was   due   to  increased  number  of capsules/plant, number of  seeds/capsule and  1000-seed weight. Pathak and Dixit ( 1986) reported direct effect of number of capsules, capsule length, number of seeds /capsule and 1000-seed weight on  seed yield. Yadava  eta!. ( 1980)  reported significant correlations of seed   yield   with  number of  capsules,  primary  branches and   1000-seed weight.  Two mutants, M-109 and  M-110 produced the  highest number of  capsules/plant (37  and  39 capsules/plant,  respectively)  followed  by   S-30   (36 .capsules/plant).   Number of seeds/capsule and  1000-seed weight were  also  found to be higher in most of the  mutants than the  control.
