Incidence of Gall Midge (orseolia Oryzae) in Rice as Influenced by the Variation in Transplanting Date and Spacing

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Influence of transplanting date and spacing on the incidence of gall midge (Orseolia oryzae) in rice was investigated during the period from July to December, 1991. The incidence of gall midge was greatly influenced by the transplanting date and spacing. The rice plants transplanted in July had lower incidence of gall midge. The highest attack was observed in the plants transplanted in August. The infestation of gall midge was higher at closer spacing. The plants of July transplanting produced more yield than those of August transplanting.

Objectives:

To exmine the effect of transplanting date and spacing on the incidence of gall midge pest in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm, Mymensingh from July to December, 1991. A split-plot design was followed with three replications. The seedlings of the variety TN1 were transplanted at different sowing dates at fortnightly intervals and at different spacing. The transplanting dates were 9th July,24th July, 8th August and 23rd August. The spacing were 20 em x 10 em, 20 em x 15 em, 20 em x 20 em and 20 em x 25 em. The transplanting dates were assigned to the main plots and the spacing were assigned to the subplots. The subplot size was 3m x 4m ( 1 2m2). The gaps between main plots, replications and subplots were 0.5m. The experimental plots were fertilized with N, P and K at the rate of 80, 60 and 40 kg/ha, respectively. Normal cultural practices were followed. No protective measures were taken against the pests.Data on the incidence of gall midge(% onion shoot) were collected at 30 and 45 days after transplanting. The percentage of infestation was calculated according to the formula of Gomez.The yield data were recorded after harvest. All these data were subjected to statistical analysis.

Achievement/Findings:

The transplanting date and spacing were found to influence the incidence of gall midge in rice . The percentage of onion shoot was lowest in the plants of first transplanting and highest on the plants of last transplanting date. The difference among planting dates with respect to the percentage of onion shoot were significant at 30 days after transplanting but no significant difference was observed at 45 days after transplanting, though the plants transplanted on 23rd August had the highest percentage of onion shoot ( 4.9%). The cause of higher incidence in the late transplanted crops was possibly due to the fact that the populations of gall midge was low at the early stage of crop growth. The population of the pest increased gradually at the later part of the season and so, the infestation of gall midge was higher in late planted crops.
