An experiment was conducted to find out the effect of different levels of nitrogen and spacing on the growth and yield of stem amaranth (Amaranthus Iividis L.) at Horticulture Farm in Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), Dhaka, during March 15, 2004 to May 15, 2004. Three spacing viz. S1,=20 cm x 20 cm, S2, =20 cm x 30 cm and S3,= 20 cm x 40 cm and four levels of nitrogen, viz., N0 = control, N1,= 100 kg N/ ha, N2,= 150 kg N/ ha, N3 = 200 kg N/ ha were used in this experiment. The yield contributing characters such as plant height, leaf length, average number of leaves per plant, average number of branch per plant, stem girth, branched girth and average plant weight were significantly differed among the three spacing and four levels of nitrogen. The maximum plant height (S7.67cm), leaf length (21.71 cm), average number of leaves per plant (75.58), average number of branch per plant (13.67), stem girth (1.90 cm), branch girth (1.31 cm) were found from the widest spacing (S3,) and the highest dose of nitrogen (N3) and the minimum of all the parameters were found in the closest spacing (S1,) and control nitrogen level (N0). The highest marketable yield (79.44 t/ ha) of was found from S2N3 and the minimum yield (2S.0t/ha) was recorded from S2N0.

To investigate the optimum dose of nitrogenous fertilizer and optimum spacing for maximum yield of stem amaranth.

The plants of branched stem amaranth were grown at Horticulture Farm in Sher-e-Bangia Agricultural University (SAU), Dhaka, Bangladesh. The experiment was carried out during summer season (March 15, 2004 to May 15, 2004). Seeds of stem amaranth were collected from the Department of Horticulture and Post harvest Technology, SAU, Dhaka. Seeds were sown on March 15, 2004 in the plot as per treatment and layout. Manure and fertilizers were applied as per recommendation. The doses were 15 t/ha cow dung, 250 kg/ ha Triple Superphosphate (TSP) and 260 kg/ ha Muriate of Potash (MP). The total amount of cow dung was applied during land preparation. Entire amount of Muriate of potash (MP) and Triple Superphosphate (TSP) was applied at the final land preparation. The experiment was laid out in a spilt - plot Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The two factors were used in the experiment, viz., three different spacing (S1=20 cm x 20 cm, S2 = 20 cm x 30 cm, and S3 = 20 cm x 40 cm) and four levels of nitrogen (N0 = control, N1= 100 kg N/ ha, N2= 150 kg N/ ha, and N3 = 200 kg N/ ha). The treatments combination were S1 N0 (20 cm x 20 cm and control N), S1N1 (20 cm x 20 cm and 100 kg N/ ha), S1N2 (20 cm x 20 cm and 150 kg N/ ha) S1N3 (20 cm x 20 cm and 200 Kg N/ ha), S2N0 (20 cm x 30 cm and control N), S2N1 (20 cm x 30 cm and 100 kg N/ ha), S2N2 (20 cm x 30 cm and 150 kg N/ ha), S2N3 (20 cm x 30 cm and 200 kg N/ ha), S3N0 (20 cm x 40 cm and Control N), S3N1 (20 cm x 40 cm and 100 kg N/ ha), S3N2 (20 cm x 40 cm and 150 kg N/ ha) and S3N3 (20 cm x 40 cm and 200 kg N/ ha). Data were collected from the ten randomly selected plants for each treatment combination and replication, such as, plant height (em), leaf length (cm), average number of leaves per plant, average number of branches per plant, stem girth (cm), average branch girth (cm), average plant weight (g) and marketable yield (t/ ha), The means were separated by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

This result revealed that the marketable yield increased with the increased in nitrogen application. This might be caused that nitrogen stimulates the vegetative growth and more nitrogen helps more vegetative growth resulting the highest marketable yield in N3. Marked variation was noticed in respect of marketable yield among the treatments combination. The maximum marketable yield (79.44 t/ ha) was found in S2N3) and the minimum (25.0 t/ha) was found from S1N0 which was statistically similar to that of S2N0.
