A laooratory experiment was carried out on sorption behaviour of K+, Ca2+ and P of three soil series of the Agro-ecological Zone (9), Old Brahmaputra Floodplain, with a view to assess the amount of these nutrients sorbed by soils when recommended doses of fertilizers were applied at field capacity under various status of organic matter, Results showed that there were wide variations in sorption of the nutrients. In general, the sorption of these nutrients decreased with the increase in organic matter status of Ghatail and Sonatola series while increased with increase in concentration of the solution. In Tarakanda series the addition of organic matter increased sorption of nutrients. The sorption of P was highest in all soils followed by K+ and Ca2+ The soils of Ghatail series sorbed the lowest amount of K+, Ca2+ and P. In contrast, the soils of Sonatola series sorbed the lowest amount of K+ because of its higher amount of Ca2+ mainly. In all soils, the maximum ion sorption was found at high concentration (Field capacity) and the sorption of different ions increased with the passes of time.

To examining the K, Ca and P sorption behavior of soils under different organic matter status, nutrient concentration and time on nutrient retention capacity of three soils of Old Brahmaputra Floodplain.

This experiment was conducted in the Department of soil Science, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The soil of Sonatola series was collected from Churkhai and Boilore while that of Ghatail series from Charpara of Sadar thana, Mymensingh. In contrast, the soil of Tarakanda series was collected from Uzan para of Trishal thana. Physico-chemical properties of theses three soil  samples were collected from a depth of 0-15 cm from three different places. Collected soils were preserved in plastic pot with proper labeling for chemical analysis and sorption studies.Soil samples were analyzed for texture, particle density, pH, EC, organic matter available P, exchangeable K and Ca following standard methods as described by Jackson. Sorption solutions of K+, Ca2+ and P of three different concentrations were prepared by dissolving calculated amounts of KH2PO4, KCI and CaCl2 salts in water. Three sets of plastic bottles with three replications were prepared for 3 different periods i.e., 2.5, 10 and 48 hours for each of low, medium and high concentration. So, 3 x 3 x 3 = 27 bottles for each soil series and 27 x 3 = 81 bottles for three soil series. Four gram of soil was taken in each of 27 bottles. Remarking 9 bottles for sorption solution of low concentration, 9 for medium concentration and 9 for high concentration. Forty ml of respective sorption solution was added to each of 9 bottles, shaken for 30 minutes in a horizontal shaker and allowed to stand for sorption. The suspensions were filtered through a retentive filter paper and the concentration of P, K and Ca in the equilibrium solutions was determined.

It is clear from the above study that when different doses of fertilizers are applied to a soil at same moisture levels, different amount of added fertilizers are sorbed by the soil. At low concentration, lesser amount of added nutrients is sorbed because of lower ionic strength. On the other hand, higher amount of Ca2+, P and K+ are sorbed when ionic strength of solution is increased due to fertilization in higher amount. For sustaining fertility, it is desirable to get all the nutrient ions sorbed by soil in a balanced proportion. Hence, different fertilizer doses may be recommended for different moisture regimes of a soil. Further study is necessary to come to a conclusion in this respect. Organic matter reduces the nutrient sorption and thereby increases availability of nutrient.
