Depodding Effects on Morphological Features and Yield Attributes in Mungbean Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was performed to study the effect of depodding on morpho-physiological and reproductive characters, yield and related traits in two mungbean varieties. The experiment comprised four degree of depodding viz., 0 (control), 5, 10 and 15-days continuous depodding from beginning of anthesis and two mungbean varieties viz., Binamung-6 BU mung2. Results indicated that most of morpho-physiological parameters viz., plant height, branch number, leaf area, chlorophyll, TDM, total reproductive unit, raceme number and raceme length increased with increasing depodding duration. On the other hand, yield contributing characters viz., number of opened flowers/plant, flowering duration (after ceasement of depodding), number of pods/plant, pod length, number of seeds/pod, single pod weight and 100-seed weight and shelling percentage decreased with increasing depodding duration which resulted decreased seed yield. But up to 5 days depodding had little adverse effect on yield attributes and yield indicating mungbean plants tolerate moderate sink loss. Interaction of variety and depodding duration on seed yield revealed that seed yield decreased with increasing depodding duration in both varieties but the decrement was greater in Binmung-6 than in BU mung2.

Objectives:

To study the effect of depodding on morpho-physiological and reproductive characters, yield and related traits in two mungbean varieties.

Methodology:

Two summer munbgean genotypes, Binamung-6 and BU mung2 were used as planting materials. Urea, TSP and MP were applied at the rate of 40, 80 and 60 kg/ha, respectively. All the fertilizer were applied as basal dose during final land preparation. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with three replications where varieties were placed in main plot and depodding in sub-plot. The row to row and plant to plant distances were 30 cm and 10 cm, respectively. The four depodding were employed in two mungbean varieties viz., Binamung-6 and BU Mung2. The depodding was started from the beginning of anthesis. The depodding treatments were: Control: No pod was removed in the racemes. All pods were removed continuously for 5, 10 and 15 days beginning from the first day of pod set. At harvest, yield components and dry mass production into different plant parts were recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

Depodding has tremendous effect on plant parameters in mungbean; ii) increased morpho-physiological characters was observed with increasing depodding duration while reverse trend was observed in yield and yield attributes; iii) the seed yield and related traits remained unaffected when plants were depodded for 5 consecutive days which indicated that mungbean plant tolerate moderate sink loss.
