Evaluation of Four Groundnut Varieties on the Basis of Growth and Dry Matter Partitioning

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted to investigate growth and dry matter partitioning in four groundnut varieties viz., Binachinabadam-1, Binachinabadam-2, Binachinabadam-3 and Dhaka-1. High yielding varieties had shorter plant height, greater branch number and increased TDM plant^-1but reverse results were observed in low yielding ones. Binachinabadam-2 produced the highest pod yield (23.02 g plant^-1 and 3604 kg ha^-1) due to the production of bolder and higher number of pods plant^-1. Dhaka-1 produced the lowest pod yield although it had the highest number of pods plant^-1due to production of smaller pods. Dry mass partitioning into seed was significantly greater in Binachinabadam-1 but total economic yield and its related traits were greater in Binachinabadam-2 because of total dry mass production and its greater allocation into root, stem, leaf, husk and seed weight plant^-1.

Objectives:

To evaluate some canopy characteristics and growth parameters; and to investigate relative dry matter production ability and their patterns of distribution to different plant parts in groundnut.

Methodology:

The field experiment was conducted at the Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during the period from November 2006 to April 2007 to investigate flowering pattern, reproductive efficiency, growth, dry matter partitioning and yield attributes in four varieties. The varieties were Binachinabadam-1, Binachinabadam-2, Binachinabadam-3 and Dhaka-1. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The doses of fertilizers were: urea 40, TSP 80, MP 60 and gypsum 40 kg ha^-1. The size of the unit plot was 3 m x 2 m. Plant to plant and row to row distances were maintained at 15 cm and 30 cm, respectively. To study ontogenetic growth characteristics and to know the optimum maturity, a total of five harvests were made and at each harvest, data were collected on some morpho-physiological, yield attributes and yield. The first crop sampling was done at 100 DAS and continued at an interval of 15 days up to 160 DAS. From each plot, five plants were randomly selected and uprooted for obtaining data of necessary parameters. The plants were separated into leaves, stems, roots, matured and immatured pods, and the corresponding dry weights were recorded after oven drying at 80 ± 2⁰ C for 72 hours. At harvest, yield and yield components were recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically and the means were adjudged by DMRT at 5% level of probability.

Achievement/Findings:

High yielding varieties should have higher TDM for getting higher yield in groundnut; and Binachinabadam-2 performed superior among the studied varieties in respect of growth, dry mass production and yield attributes but Binachinabadam-1 was the best in respect of assimilate partitioning to economic yield.
