Hybrid 620 I rice popularly known as Alok was grown in Bangladesh for the first time at a limited scale in the Boro season in 1998-99. BRAC marketed Alok seeds to some 200 farmers around its centers at Trishal, Boilor and Churkhai under Mymensingh district. Alok's potentiality in terms of profitability and yield was studied taking 78 samples from 17 villages of Trishal, Boilor and Churkhai. Among the sample farmers, about 58.0 percent were owner operators. about 37.0 percent owner-cum tenants and only about 5.0 percent were pure tenants. About 76.0 percent of the farmers were of small category, about 17.0 percent were of medium category and 8.0 percent belonged to the large farm size group. About 56.0 percent of the sample farmers were literate. Production of Alok involved higher costs.compared to the established HYVs; per hectare (ha) cash cost and variable cost were calculated at Tk 24,225.00 and Tk 29,248.00, respectively. Alok's yield obtained per ha was about 6.6 tonnes and the net return was Tk 18,376.00. The gross margin and the cash margin per ha were Tk 26,410.00 and Tk 30,537.00, respectively. Wide variation in resource use and yields obtained was found in the study area indicating yield instability. Production of Alok appeared to be profitable but yield instability was found to be a major discouraging factor.

I. To know the socio-economic profile of sample Alok rice growers;

II. To determine the costs of production and profitability of Alok hybrid rice;

Ill. To determine the factors to the variation of yield;

IV. To determine the resource use efficiency of the Alok rice growers.

Farm survey method was followed in the study. Seventeen villages of BRAC centers of Trishal, Boilor and Churkhai under Mymensingh district where Alok was grown in the Boro season were chosen for collection of data. A stratified random sampling technique was followed. First, listing of the hybrid Alok growers of the selected villages with the help of the BRAC officials was done. Thus 210 hybrid Alok growers were listed from which 78 growers were randomly chosen as samples for this study. Hybrid Alok was grown in the Boro season starting from mid December in 1998 and harvested in ApriI 1999 and the data collected therefore pertain to this period. The study area belonged to the Old Brahmaputra alluvial soil. It is a homogeneous area suitable for intensive rice culture throughout Aman, Aus and Boro season. Production of hybrid Alok involved the following costs: cost of human labour, animal labour, power tiller, seeds, fertilizers, manure, irrigation, insecticides, interest on operating capital and land use cost. The collected data were classified, tabulated and analyzed in accordance with the objectives of the study. Tabular, enterprise costing, gross margin and multiple regression analyses were performed to estimate quantitative magnitudes of the functional relationship between various factors. To determine the effects of variable inputs on production of hybrid Alok, two forms of production function were initially estimated. These were linear and Cobb-Douglas form. Finally, Cobb-Douglas production function was chosen on the basis of the best fit. The specification of the Cobb-Douglas production function was as follows: Y = aX1b1X2b2X3b3X4b4X5b5Ui. The function was linearised by converting it into the log linear form. Thus the empirical specification of the function was: In Y = In a+b1 InX1+b2 InX2+ b InX3+b4 ln X4+b5 InX5+Ui. Y = Gross return (Tk/ha) a = Constant/intercept X1 = Human labour (Tk/ha) X2 = Seedling (Tk/ha) X3 = Fertilizer (Tk/ha) X4 = Irrigation (Tk/ha) X5 = Tilling (Tk/ha) Ui = Stochastic error term In = Natural logarithm b., b2 b, = Co-efficient of variables.

Facts indicate that Alok has high yield potentiality and should be grown under a scheme giving proper training to the farmers. Findings of the study should be discussed at the policy level and at the farmers' level to rationalize resource use. It appears that BRAC alone is not enough to extend Alok at the farmers' level and the DAE should be involved intensively. It offers a great opportunity of GO-NGO cooperation. The scientists of Bangladesh have a valid reason to speak against the use of imported hybrid seeds particularly of rice because Bangladesh will gradually be dependent on the multinational companies. Bangladesh may be a victim of international rice politics and scientists' concern should not be ignored. Therefore. research station, DAE and the NGO cooperation should be built up to produce these hybrid seeds within Bangladesh.
